Day 114: Four-Color Funnybooks for 05-29-08

This was an expensive week.  A lot of really great stuff came out, including DC’s big crossover, Final Crisis.  Hopefully both Crisis and Secret Invasion will both be worth it, as there are maybe, at best, five books I buy monthly (not trade) that aren’t connected to the big two, so if they suck, I’m out a lot of cash.

The Mighty Avengers #14 - This ( Read more... )

x-men, daredevil, thor, secret invasion, superman, resolution, avengers, batman, iron fist, final crisis

Wait, what? Thor? JMS on Thor? How can you possibly say that? This issue was fine, as it involved Heimdal killing frost giants, and there was that issue where Thor fought a terribly mis-characterized Iron Man, but seriously? Hardly anything happens in the entire first trade. How can you have a whole trade of set up with no particularly large fights in a book about fucking Thor? Fraction did more in one double-sized issue than JMS has done in 9 issues. Do I like the universe he's created here? Yes, actually, I do, but as I understand it this was largely Gaiman's work. I'm not saying I would rather have Gaiman on Thor, as 1602 is the only comic of his I've even remotely liked, but JMS takes a good premise and tells it poorly.

Simply put, in 9 issues there are probably about 7 pages or so of purely visceral storytelling, and in a book about Thor, that's no fucking good.

Buz is calling you out on your flip-flopping ways.

The last decent Thor run was Romita Jr. and Dan Jurgens nearly ten years ago. This is the first one to actually try something new since then, and while it's taking its time to get there, I'm enjoying the world, and a lot of the characterization. I could use more Warriors Three, but who couldn't.

As for issue 9, that's not the issue that turned it around for me. While there's a lack of Thor in it, it's part of a greater whole, and while I was reviewing that issue, most of my comments where directed at the whole run.

Finally, any Thor book where everyone looks like badass medieval warriors and not Ren Fair rejects gets a thumbs up in my book.
