Wow… this is an excellent little doc. I had never made the connection of the ’50 Cent’ mold of black masculinity and the pre-emancipation picture of black men, and the whole measure of black masculinity being calculated in negatives. I also think it’s amazing that 50 Cent recognized G.W. Bush as ‘gangsta.’ (Which, if you define masculinity as being ‘gangsta’ and ‘gangsta’ is being primarily concerned with attaining power through force, he is.)
No problem T-Diddy :) j/k Yeah, I was teaching class last week, and none of the students (even the ones that supported Obama) seemed to make any of the connections around race or gender. So this was quite timely. For me, these connections are so so poignant because they've been tied to public (and private/familial) perceptions of me, and how authentic my peers thought I was as black. Blah Blah :) I'm glad you liked it!
