books -- in need of recommendations!

So I somehow got roped into the WiSE (Women in Science and Engineering) planning committee, and now I'm in charge of leading a women in science fiction book club... which means I need books to read! Ideally, the books should ( Read more... )

Left Hand of Darkness was a CSW summer-reading book...

I mostly don't read stuff that fits that description, though. My SF is all written by dudes with beards. And it is often tediously long.

Yeah, I'm debating whether to put LHoD on the list. I really love it, but it's more social SF than hard SF, and it seems like a lot of people think it's dense/tedious/boring.

No beards allowed! Unless it's women with beards writing tediously long SF. Which I'd be down with.

I haven't read much by her, but Elizabeth Bear might fit (I think you read her stuff already, so you'd know better than I). Carnival has...feminist-y aspects?
