Ciao from Firenze

Seeing as tonight is my last night in Italy I thought it was time I make an effort and make contact. Italy has been fantastic! It's definitely a country I will have to come back to - so many places, so little time.

Hi sweetie! Hee. You commented on my friend Jeanette's entry - you can tell up the top - I am "petrapolo" and she is "indianajette" - we are sharing the blog because we will be doing so much stuff together!

Oh I'm so glad you will be able to get some time off when I come - that is beyond lovely of you.

Can I let you know about desitinations? I'd love to see your brother's flat (and your brother, given I've not met him yet) - but seeing as I plan to end up in Edinburgh eventually I would really like a chance to see the countryside around you - and maybe a day trip somewhere like Cornwall because I've never been to that part of the world... is that doable? Either way it doesn't bother me - I just want to hang out with you... and watch Supernatural! Yay!

Hi Jeanette, Deborah here. Yes we have had floods in NSW. A mini-cyclone-type storm hit the Central Coast last Thursday and Friday (7th & 8th June). Major flooding, 8 people dead, including a family of 5 - their car was swept away after a road collapse. Widespread blackouts, some areas still without power a week later. We also had a major train accident the previous week - a lorry ran into a train at a level crossing and sliced through a carriage. 11 people were killed. But enough bad news. Glad to hear you are enjoying Italy. I look forward to hearing about France. Work is ticking along okay - the member vote re sale to Kaplan closes today (probably care factor zero for you!). We get to hear who we will be working for next Monday. Lots of press against the sale so the thinking now is the members may vote against it. Interesting times!
Bientot Deborah

Hi Deb! Always good to hear news from home. I'm aiming to get to Paris on Tuesday and spend a few days there before going down to Avignon. Just researching things now and your tips are coming in very handy.

Jeanette!

Oh I KNEW you would love Rome. Your tales make me miss it! Did you get to go out along the Appian to see the catacombs? Did you get to go shopping in Florence? I need to go back and buy more leather! And the Ponte Vecchio - wow all that gold!!

Did you venture anywhere else in Tuscany? I found out a couple of weeks ago that Uncle John and Aunty Ang are moving back to Italy. Though they way to move back to Tuscany, they get free accommodation in Ischia (where Pino's family are from and Caroline and the girls were living). I think this means Europe is back on the agenda for me in about a year's time. I was going to forget Italy until I move to the UK, but I cannot pass this up!

Anyway, yes there has been some serious news while you've been away. My grandmother was evacuated from her home in Maitland! And check out what washed up on the shore of Nobby's beach in Newcastle:

Ah we have a funny story about the Apppian Way. Caught the ArcheoBus (hop on hop off bus) there and we were stranded at the San Callisto Catacombs because it was the day George Bush was in Rome so the tour buses decided to stop running! We did get to re-use our ticket the next day and it was a lovely drive around the Appian Way up to Claudius' Aquaducts (I know you appreciate them :).

Haven't done any shopping yet. Bought some glass jewellery in Florence but that is about all the shopping so far. I am trying to be very very good while I am still in my early stages of travelling.

And OMG - I can't beieve that washed up on Newcastle!

Hello from Manor St Kellyville Ridge anonymous June 14 2007, 13:02:39 UTC
Hello! Hows holidaying going? Sounds like fun. My family and i spent the long weekend in Terrigal where the storm hit hard. How fortunate for us :P Our 5 star apartments were out of power for over 24hours. No hot showers, no lights, no TV/DVD. Some cars were locked in garages because they are electric. It was quite fun actually. Spent one night surrounded in candles, playing Big 2 and drinking wine. There was nothing else to do. Anyway take care, i like hand bags and accessories :p x Mooch

Oh, the envy! anonymous June 15 2007, 07:38:43 UTC
It sounds like you're soaking up Italy like a tiramisu does Tia Maria - yumm! Am very envious, but so glad to hear how much you're enjoying it - where to next? Am mightily impressed with the internarium too - puts my old backpacking-scrappy-postcard days to shame. Enjoy, and keep scribing! (in between peronis, natch - inspired me to raid my fridge for our last one just now..)

I did have the most amazing tirimasu whilst in Rome... yum... Makes me wish I was back there now. London is cold and grey and it rained while I was walking up here! Hope you are well and that asthma isn't getting you down :)
