TL;DR: I tested, uninstalled and reinstalled the whole game, and the problem was that I saved the My Documents folder to a SSD with ExFAT file system instead of NTFS

I've updated with even more work, but in the end it turned out that I had saved to an SSD with a file catalog format that Sims 2 was unfamiliar with. Once I saved on a more "classic" hard disk, all the problems were gone. Of course, by then I had reinstalled completely, which is a challenge in itself with the older disks.
If they had remastered Sims 2 to run on modern PCs with Windows 10 and offered it on Origin, I would totally have bought it. When the game is too old to run well on Windows 7 and still more fun than the newest game in the series, you know someone has done a good job back in the days.
