it's so funny how asian countries vary. some are so forward-thinking and aesthetically-pleasing while others seem horribly entrenched in old-world ideals. when i was in yemen, i was really shocked at how archaic the whole society was. not only were all the buildings built out of rice paper and seaweed, but i had to travel everywhere in rickshaws, and my hotel--which was really just a pad of dried mud surrounded by dried beranke leaves--didn't have air conditioning or running water. i guess i'm just too much of a westerner, but i couldn't wait to get back to japan so i could make out with a couple harajuku girls and infect them with my american STDs.
