Possession is nine-tenths of the law, but there are many kinds of possession.

The green-haired witch, the immortal C.C., and the time-bending assassin Rolo, stare each other down. It is a contest of wills, this ancient duel for timeless stakes: the possession of another.

And no mere other, but Lelouch Lamperouge (formerly vi Britannia), because both the witch and the assassin who have aligned themselves with this supposed mere student know the truth. They know that he is the boy-king; godchild; the masked miracle Zero who took as a name that which is the sum of nothing and turned it into the hopes of the world and the downfall of an empire. Only C.C. and Rolo know his true worth, like no other (save perhaps his beloved sister, but they know that to risk Her is to alienate Him) and they protect this little shared secret jointly, even though they stare daggers into each other's eyes above the signature mask that separates them.

C.C. has the upper hand, she knows... this false-brother, the actor who has forgotten he's playing a role, does not have Lelouch's trust. He is only a pawn, a means to an end, and she smiles sweetly at him because she knows that the ties of family are nothing next to the logical, cool-headed attraction of business (which she maintains it is, just business).

Rolo has the upper hand, he knows... this temptress, the she-devil who blesses and curses, does not have Lelouch's trust. She is only a pawn, a means to an end, and he grins razor-sharp at her because he knows that a business arrangement is nothing next to the heartfelt instinct of soul and promise and blood (which he'll spill for Him, even if it's his own).

These polar opposites who hate and love in equal parts, because they'd as soon have Lelouch to themselves as easily as they'd kill each other, given the chance.

Lelouch sits on the other side of the one-way mirror, a rook and queen intertwined in his fingers turning over and over, and smiles because it is the King who controls the lesser pieces and makes them fight without ever knowing the truth of the game.
