9. "I laughed and said, life is easy. What I meant was, life is easy with you here, and when you leave, it will be hard again." -- miranda july
Flicking off the bathroom light, Claire walked quietly into the bathroom as she continued to rub the lotion between her fingers and over her hands. Stepping over one giant sleeping dog and then a tiny one, she chuckled slightly at the sight of Kuma and Ewok curled up together. Especially considering Ewok was about the same size of Kuma's head. As she reached the bed, she reached out to pat the sleeping cat's side to encourage him to wake up and move off of her pillow which he did with a rather evil little glare before slinking off.
"You know, I think we're over run with pets." Claire smirked a little as she pulled back the blankets.
"I wonder who is at fault for that?" Hiro glanced up from his comic book, looking amused as he teased her.
"Oh shush, I'm only at fault for Ewok and Puck." She glanced towards her cat who had chosen to curl up at the foot of the bed. It wasn't like he had to worry about being kicked considering his owner was short.
"I think you helped with Kuma." He grinned before flipping back to his comic.
Claire looked over their pets before chuckling softly as she settled back against the pillows she had piled up. Reaching over, she grabbed her book off the nightstand, removing the bookmark before opening it up and settling to reading as well. It wasn't long before she twisted around enough to lean against Hiro's side, her head resting against his stomach as she lost herself in her book. After awhile, Hiro yawned softly before reaching to place his comic on top of her head. As it slid forward to block her line of sight, Claire couldn't help but laugh before reaching up to pluck it from in front of her face. "Hey now."
"What are you reading?" Hiro reached to pluck the book from her hand, reading over the title before arching a brow at her. "Haven't you read this a million times now?"
"Not quite a million." She rolled her eyes at him before rolling over onto her side, facing him as she reached for her book but he kept it out of reach.
"Maybe I should read it to see what you like about it." He twisted a bit, off setting her a bit as he tried to keep the book out of her hands as she continued to reach for them. "Maybe you want me to be a vampire?"
"Sure. Then you can dazzle me." She giggled at the idea.
"Are you saying I don't already?" He scoffed as though he were mildly offended at the idea. The glitter of amusement in his eyes told her that he was rather amused by the idea as he turned back towards her.
As she grabbed the book from his hands, she sat up to reach for the bookmark so that she could put it in the book to mark her spot but the arm that wrapped around her waist didn't let her get very far. As he hauled her down to the mattress and pinned her, she laughed as she forgot the book to her side. She was about to say something but instead she focused on the kiss that made her forget whatever words were coming to mind. Curling a hand against his cheek, she closed her eyes as she felt the warm glow while it spread through her chest and the rest of her body.
When the kiss broke and they pulled apart, she smiled softly at him as the love she had for him was rather apparent in her eyes. "You do dazzle me, all the time." It was cheesy and they both knew it but he still smiled softly at her before leaning down as though he was going to kiss her. At the last minute, he let out a little growl before lunging to playfully bite at the side of her neck. The whole thing caused her to squeal as she squirmed and ducked down, laughing.
At the foot of their bed, the cat eyed them with contempt for waking him up again and so he left in a huff. Kuma lifted his head with a sigh as Ewok started to bark excitedly at the sudden commotion but neither human paid attention to him as they started to play fight on the bed. She wasn't lying though because he did dazzle her.
Hiro had a way of making her day, and her life, better than she could remember. There was going to come a day when she would be without him and it was going to be painfully hard to be without him but right now it was good. Right now, she was happy.
