i lived up to my promise to post clearer pictures of skandar. these are probably going to be the last you're going to see of him. regrettably so since i took them where the light was best- my kitchen. skandar is still unfit for public consumption, so please excuse the pots and pans ( Read more... )

I highly recommend sueding his hooves. I put a ton of hot glue in between that joint and it seems to help reduce wear on the paint.
Mine is still doomed to a fate of getting repainted often though it seems. You'll just have to accept that he's a high mantenance boy! :D

Congrats on getting him!
I think that the "furry" parts and the hooves look great. The color you used for the hooves is really nice and natural looking. I like all the red tones too.
My only sugesstion would be to maybe blend the color a little furthur up his legs.

i have no problems with having to keep up with him- it's fun. i'm a little wary of hot glue sueding (mostly because of my idustrial glue gun) but i'll try it. after sueding it, the joint doesn't sit funny on the hoof? or do you smooth out the hot glue so that's it as flat as possible?

don't tell any one but the hooves are actually a second attempt :P
my first idea was to go for darker colors, and i had a light brown orange going farther up the legs, and boy did it rub me the wrong way, which is why i decided to not carry the color up the legs on the second try. i do wish i could have done that though, but i was too afraid of messing it up!

I put the glue on the underside of the lowest leg piece where it would meet with the hoof part. Then very quickly and with a wet finger (so it doesn't stick to you), I smoothed it out. It made it flat so it doesn't stick out too much.
I tried my best to work it in under the sharp parts especially. It doesn't seem to me like it sits funny and it works pretty well to prevent scratching.
Oh yeah, and instead of using your industrial glue gun, maybe try one of those little craft store ones with the mini sticks--I don't think they get as hot, but I might be wrong. :P
Definitely be careful not to touch the gun itself to the doll anyway.
Good luck!

thank you so much for the details. the wet finger (boy that sounds wrong) idea is a good one. never thought about that.

yeah... my glue gun has a warning on the side of it say's "caution, will burn flesh." never seen that on the craft glue guns...

Aaah Sard. Can't wait to see him with eyeballs, he'll probably look even more stunning. Last time I tried a faceup I was getting a grainy texture too. I was thinking it was uneven layers. I couldn't get a nice smooth look. I found it hard to tell if everything was coated evenly, so that wasn't fun. I like the blushing on the lips, I think he has the most colorful blushing I've seen on a Sard, and I like that. I'll most likely go toward earthy tones, so he'll be the "let's frolic in the woods!" type.

yeah, how do you tell if everything is coated evenly? :/
i have three heads to do faceups so maybe i'll get to the bottom of this mystery.

"let's frolic in the woods" is how i like to see Sard, so i'm looking forward to seeing him! good luck!
