can someone please explain to me what the expression " you can't have your cake and eat it too" means
i've been wondering about it my whole life

Katy! you make me laugh...

Okay well think of it this way say you have a really pretty cake, you know, decorated all nice and you just love looking at it, but you also bet it would taste so good, so you have to choose: you can either eat the cake and lose how nice it once looked; or you can look at it and let how good it tastes go to waste.

It's one of those sayings that are supposed to help us out in real life with making decisions, and realizing that we can't be hogs and have everything...but it doesn't really apply because in America you can just buy two cakes.
