“In heaven all the interesting people are missing.”
She had gotten the phone call late Tuesday night, and she hadn’t left her grandmother’s apartment since. Now it was coming up on midnight on Wednesday, and she wasn’t sure what she should do. She didn’t want to be the one to do this. She shouldn’t have to be the one to do this. It wasn’t fair that she was the only one left in their family.
It had been her and Alice for so long, and she didn’t want that to change. Alice had been one of the first people to actually really care about her, more than beyond their obligation as a parent, and she had taken her in when no one else would. And now-now she was going to be alone. The last of her family was gone and there was nothing she could do in order to get her to stay.
“Mags?”
Miranda’s head appeared in the doorway of the living room, and Maggie looked up at her with a heavy sigh, before reaching out for her friend’s hand. Miranda made her way closer, sliding her arms around her best friend’s shoulders. It wasn’t until she was settling in close and her head was resting against Miranda’s shoulders that the tears started to come out, sobbing into the curtain of blond hair. Miranda just held her close, rocking her slightly, as she tried to calm her and get her through the worst of the tears.
Once Maggie started to calm down, she sat up, brushing the tears away from her eyes and taking a deep breath. “Okay. I think I can do this.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah,” Maggie nodded. “Just-don’t go anywhere.”
“I don’t plan on it,” Miranda nodded, before letting Maggie go and leaning back into the couch.
Maggie pushed away from her, making her way into the bedroom to where her grandmother had been resting. The doctor was waiting for her to pull the plug, as per the request of Alice’s living will, and Maggie knew she would never be ready, but this time she’d at least be more prepared than she has been. She made her way closer, slipping her hand into Alice’s to give it a soft squeeze, before leaning forward and pressing a kiss to her forehead lightly.
“Bye, Gram,” she said softly, reaching up to brush back one last tear, before reaching over to the machines and starting to turn it off as per the doctor’s instruction. Once the machine flatlined completely, she collapsed back into one of the nearby chairs, and started crying all over again, not believing that this was really over.
