NAME: Koki Kariya

SERIES/SOURCE: The World Ends With You
AGE: 17
GENDER: male
ROLE: student

BACKGROUND:
Kariya grew up in a small town in rural Japan. However, he was born into a dysfunctional family that neither expected nor wanted kids, so he spent most of his childhood either neglected, emotionally browbeaten, or avoiding his parents. Although very intelligent, he never reached his full potential in school, and frequently tried to get himself detention so he wouldn't have to go home.

When he was 11, his parents got a very messy divorce. His father was given custody and soon moved them to Shibuya to live with a female co-worker he would later marry. Kariya's new stepmom couldn't stand children in general, especially ones she now had to live with, but by this point, he'd gotten very good at avoiding the adults in his life. Instead, he looked for his niche among the Older Kids, starting to ditch class, bleach his hair, and even smoke. Despite all his efforts, though, he never quite fit in.

Meanwhile, his home life continued to deteriorate. After one particularly nasty fight with his stepmom, Kariya's powers suddenly activated, plunging him into a surreal alternate Shibuya totally empty of other people, which he would later name the Underground (or UG for short). Over time, he gradually taught himself to control his powers and transition back to the Realground (RG), but by the time he could do this, almost a year had passed. The RG he came back to wasn't quite the one he left, however. At first he thought his dad had just re-divorced in his absence, but as it turned out, he had never remarried in the first place. To this day Kariya isn't sure how that happened, but he wasn't complaining.

With his stepmom out of the picture, his life improved somewhat after that. His dad even paid him some actual attention for a change, at least until his job sucked him back in and things returned to the status quo. Kariya put just enough effort into school not to get held back, and as long as he kept quiet and didn't get arrested, his dad didn't care what he did otherwise. Partly because his powers made it easier, he began to get into Shibuya's freerunning scene, which is how he ran into Uzuki Yashiro (quite literally). They became fast friends, and a year and a half later, she'd be the one who bodily dragged him to the Xavier Institute with her.

PERSONALITY:
On the surface Kariya seems like a slacker, but look deeper and you will find... a slacker. He rarely puts much effort into anything, instead sliding by on natural talent. He's far more likely to actually do something if he can make a game out of it, but not being a naturally competitive person, he takes it graciously whether he wins or loses.

Frequently flippant and occasionally morbid, he can definitely be an acquired taste. He's not overtly unfriendly, but he prefers to observe his world rather than actively participate, and plays very close to the vest - although that's partly because he gets a kick out of being mysterious, too. When it's important, though, he's generally honest, and keeps his promises.

APPEARANCE:
Tall and lanky, with angular features and a permanent slouch. He has a lot of hair, bleached bright orange and held loosely back with bobby pins. Also wears orange-tinted glasses. Frequently seen gnoshing on some kind of lollipop. Dresses in kind of a punk style; a lot of his clothes have skeletons or zombies on them. Does not have wings (his icons are lying).

POWERS:
It's important to note here, Kariya doesn't understand how his powers work, exactly. For simplicity's sake he just tells people he can teleport, although he does know it's a little more complex than that.

In reality, his powers involve creating isolated bubbles of space-time around his body, removing himself partially or completely from the timeline (that is, the RG). That allows him to turn effectively imperceptible to other people (invisible, intangible, inaudible, etc), or to enter the UG (which is the same thing, except that he can't perceive other people, either). He can also bend time and space slightly around his bubble, which functionally translates into short-range teleportation, except that he can't pass through solid objects with it. With practice, he'll be able to make more versatile use of his powers. If he gets far enough away from his timeline, he can actually enter alternate realities, but he's only done this once and can't currently reproduce the effect.

As time goes on, he and Uzuki will begin to "sync up," first moving as a single unit, and later developing secondary powers similar to one another's. They are like two halves of a whole, after all...

ANYTHING ELSE?: Severely allergic to chocolate. Also, no longer smokes - he's replaced it with a lollipop habit.

ooc, xi
