Character Name: Light Yagami / Kira

Character Age: 18

Background: Here!  (Point in canon I’d be taking him from is just after the death of L)

Personality: Light Yagami, as described by artist Takeshi Obata, is “an honors student who’s a little out there.” Understatement of the century. Light is a brilliant young prodigy. As a student, he’s always excelled in his schoolwork and in generally every aspect of his life. But it simply isn’t enough for him---despite his undeniable talent and unquestionable charm, Light finds himself bored. It’s this boredom, really, that drives him to use the Death Note when it first falls right into his lap. When Ryuk first asks him why Light would want to rid the world of evil, that’s exactly how he replies: he decided to become the God of a New World because he was bored.

So really, it doesn’t take much to notice that Light’s personal sense of justice is more than a little skewed. Though he claims to be doing this for the good of the world, to create a new utopia, it’s all too evident that Light is entirely self-serving as he carries out his plans. When Lind L. Tailor makes a live ICPO broadcast to challenge Kira, Light effectively snaps, crying out that he is justice and that anyone who would challenge God is truly the one who’s evil. And when the FBI gets involved, investigating those who may be linked to Kira, Light readily breaks from his pattern of only killing criminals to start murdering the FBI. And there are plenty of other non-criminals who feel a taste of Kira’s “justice.”

One of Light’s key talents as Kira is his ability to manipulate. He readily manipulates events to his liking---engineering the death of a thief by forcing him to hijack a bus en route to Space Land, all for the sake of learning the name of one FBI Agent. He’s not afraid to manipulate people, be it through the power of his Death Note or through his own silver tongue.

It’s all just a game, really-and Light is more than willing to do whatever it takes to win. Whether it’s something as simple as keeping level-headed and cool during a tennis match or something as complex as emotionally blackmailing a God of Death in an incredibly elaborate scheme, Light Yagami is always one step ahead of his competition.

And who is his chief competitor, you might ask? None other than an enigmatic detective known as L. This detective has been a thorn in Light’s side since the beginning, and has stopped at nothing to jump ahead of Light, prove his identity as Kira, and bring him down. The chaotic cat-and-mouse relationship Light shares with his archnemesis is fairly dynamic: they’re both well aware of what the other is capable of, and yet they’re still able to surprise one another. These surprises don’t always come in such bold moves as wiring Light’s entire room with bugs and cameras (64 in total) or enrolling in the same university as him: one of the biggest things L has done that’s thrown Light for a loop was to call him a friend. Antagonistic friendship or no, Light doesn’t hesitate at all to implement his plan and terminate the detective, catching him in his arms and sneering wickedly down at him as he dies.

Abilities: Aside from a genius intellect, a strong acting talent, and above-average athleticism, Light doesn’t have very many abilities on his own. With the power of his Death Note, however, Light is able to kill people in one of the most elaborate, indirect manners possible.

The rules of the Death Note can be found here. It should be noted that as the Death Note is going to be a regain, Light is going to lose his memories of the Death Note (and of being Kira, by extension) for his first long stretch in Mayfield, until he regains the book.
