I think supermarkets work when they stock "everything." The problem with some supermarkets is that they don't and you can only get the most bare bones essentials in there, plus loads of frozen/microwaveable crap and only the most common named brands of any sort. As long as supermarkets continue to sell a wide range of "stuff" with which I could conceiveably make anything, then thats great. However, if its a choice between a supermarket than only sells main brand stuff and a local shop like Maumoniats that sells lots of quirky interesting stuff, then the little guy wins every time.

Its a downside as well, because I used to spend more money on food shopping in Maumoniats than I would elsewhere as I'd just buy stuff to see what the hell it was like.

But, as much as I like Maumoniats, give me a huge, well stocked, Waitrose any day.

Holland doesn't seem to do supermakets - they've just not got the hang of it; most so-called phoney 'supermakets' are little larger than the ground floor of a medium sized house (which is what most of them are).

At times I reminisce about being in Sainsburys or Tescos or Morrisons and looking down aisles of produce from all around the world as they go off to the vanishing point.

*sigh*

Happy days.
