His conversation with Aubrey had been just yesterday. The conversation, the one where David, tongue loosened by whiskey, had asked Aubrey if he'd be interested in trying a relationship. And Aubrey had said yes

Meggie had been ecstatic from the moment she woke up. Daddy was coming, and she was going to stay up as long as she had the energy to function. Everything was marvelous come her eyes opening, but there had been something in the back of her mind to hold her tongue about Daddy and his new kissing-friend Aubrey. While she wanted to ask about it, she chose against it, rushing to hug her dad before climbing into the back seat of the car and into her booster

[[ooc: "kissing-friend" is my new favorite word. Meggie, why so adorable?]]
David loves New Year's Eve. He loves talking to his kids and learning about their lives, even the parts that are all Mel's. He's smiling when they get to Jac's and it's only slightly dampened by the realization that Meggie knows about him and Aubrey, knows everything. He trusts her not to say anything that would upset Jac, though.
"Don't you already know?" he teases her in response to her question, and opens the door for her. "Here we go," he says. "This is where I'm staying right now. Do you like it?" He scoops her up--she might be seven but he can still pick her up, and it's really good to be able to hold her.
Jac can see them from the window, and she finishes off her coffee and leaves the mug in the sink before heading to the door, straightening the tablecloth as she passes the table. Her excessive Christmas decorations are still up, there's plenty of kid-friendly finger food in the kitchen, and sure enough, there's still snow outside. (And of course, since she's her, she will be giving Meggie a makeover. With David's permission, of course. And she has no problem if Jack wants to join in, too. She does have a huge amount of wigs and tacky jewelry that would be perfect for the two of them.) There are games, there are movies, and she might have gone overboard with the gift bags.
For not having any kids of her own, she's an excellent party planner for seven-year-olds.
Meggie loves that feeling, like she's flying, but she's got an anchor to keep her from flying away. It's a good feeling, and she hugs her daddy tightly. It's a good holiday, and with as often as they see each other, she's more than ecstatic to be here. Coming here is better than going to Disneyland, and she can say that as a fact.
She looks over the housing with a serious expression suddenly, but it spreads into a smile again, and she's nodding approvingly, even if she knows this isn't going to be his forever home. "I like it, but it's even better inside."
There's a face in the window, and Meggie can't help waving a hand at Jac. She already knows this lady is nice, and she's got the best New Years planned.
