7th Anomaly [text]

Penny suggested that I put together a tutorial about the network devices for new arrivals. I was already working on something for Lucy and Emma, so I thought I'd share it. Feel free to distribute it however you want and let me know if anything is wrong or needs correcting. It's a work in progress.

Your Network Device and You

So. You're new to the City and there's a bright, shiny new something that probably recorded it. Congrats, mate, you have what is commonly referred to as a Network Device. Do you know how to use it? Possibly not. Here's some tips and tricks that might help you get used to it.

First and foremost. It will turn on all by itself. Sooner or later, it always happens. Sorry, mate, that's just the way it works. Secondly, once something is posted to the network, you're stuck with it, things are difficult if not impossible to remove, although if you're lucky someone can encrypt it for you. (I'll explain that later.)

As for the rest, I'll separate this into three sections:

What's a computer?
I like LOLcats.
All your base are belong to us.

So, beginner, intermediate and expert/geek. Ready?

BEGINNER

So this little black box is a method of communication. It's faster than pigeon, post, or pony express. Basically, you type, speak or record your image and it will be sent to the network for everyone to read, hear or see.

There's buttons on it, the alphabet, and some arrow keys. The screen has little pictures on it, and those pictures tell you what you're doing.

There's a power button at the top, that will start it and stop it. The green light means it's on. If it's red and blinking, it's recording and sending.

Here's what all the little pictures on the screen mean, you can choose one by using the arrow keys, the pictures will light up and you can pick one by pushing the key that looks like an arrow.

So you can choose a function, select it and you're good to go.

My suggestion is to start with text posts, you have the most control of those and you can do limited editing before you post.

Here's how you make a voice post. Voice posts mean people can actually hear what you're saying as you're saying it, along with some of what's happening around you.

[...voicepostinstructions.doc...LOADING]

Video posts mean people can actually see you and what's around you, Like they're looking through a window. That shiny circle on your device, that's like an eye, and what it sees, the network sees.

INTERMEDIATE

The network device works like a hand-held computer, linked to the Network via... an interface. It works like the internet, but there's no discernible satellite system or servers in the City to host everything. For all we know that clock ticking's the carrier signal, but you probably don't care about that.

The icons are all self-explanatory, if you have problems the beginner section has tutorials.

As you get settled and meet people you might want want to set up some friend groups, or enemy groups as the case may be.

Now you've done that, you might want to learn some filters. It's about the only way you're going to make posts or messages private to other people. There's a few attached to this document, just hover, click and download. They come in four flavors, filter to a single person, filter to a group, filter away from a person and last, but not least, filter away from a group.

And because I'm awesome, here's a bonus file. I have reference nodes all around the City (above ground at least) and I set up a GPS network married to the current map. Call it CPS, it's as original as the name of this place I know. I'll add the readme which has instructions on setting home and work locations and the like.

You're welcome.

EXPERT

Like I need to tell you anything. If you like, I can send you the code for any of my filters so you can tailor them. I'm open-source here, mate, knock yourself out. If you make it better, let me know and I'll upload yours instead.

It's possible that your encryptions might fail due to curses and the like. Just happens, sorry.
