AKA that character survey. Jesus this took forever. Really late, I know, but I suddenly got inspired to do it for Larry. Enjoy reading my rambling, I guess? I think it gets really bad in some spots pfff.
Oh yeah, there will be spoilers for any case Larry is involved in (1-1, 1-4, 3-2, 3-5 and AAI-5).
Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Larry stands at 5'10" and he's pretty thin, if not a little lanky. Pretty average build for a guy, I'd say.
2. How old is he?
25!
3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
I like to think that Larry's got a good swagger going on. He walks with confidence and just a little bit of a slouch. Overall he just likes to look cool.
4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
Larry's a pretty healthy guy. No conditions or disabilities here physical, at least!
5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
As I said in #3, he moves confidently. At the same time, however, he can be quite clumsy when he's trying to look cool. An example would be when he broke the Steel Samurai spear while trying to do a cool trick in AAI-4.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
Must not use bias... Larry's actually pretty handsome, but some of is various emotions can make him look rather silly. He's probably one of those guys who constantly checks himself out in the mirror and praises his reflection.
7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
Larry's skin is a nice light tan, with a bit of pink in there.
8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
Larry has brown hair that's spiked up in the center, while the other sides of his hair are slicked down. I've always wondered what his hair looks like when it's wet... Anyway, he's got some rugged sideburns and a cute little pointy goatee goin' on. I've never been one for facial hair but Larry's rockin' it.
9. What color are his eyes?
A dark shade of brown. Larry's pretty normal in this category.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
One of Larry's main features is the range of emotions that his face can show. I mean...
really.
This is still my favorite though. That smug look on his face...hnngh. Why did you have to cut it from Trials and Tribulations, Capcoooom? D;
11. What are his chief tension centers?
Probably his face. No seriously he has some really drastic expressions that he uses a lot. His cheeks probably get sore really easily...
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
He has GREAT fashion sense. Okay that is a lie. I still want to know what was going through his mind when he picked out that outfit.
But that's just one of his many outfits throughout the game. I'm pretty sure that Larry is the character who has the most outfit changes in the series, but I could be wrong. Because he goes from job to job, his outfit changes with each job. He has a
Santa costume from 1-4, a
security guard uniform from 3-2, an
artist's outfit from 3-5, and a
Steel Samurai costume from AAI-4. My favorite is probably the Steel Samurai Uniform, only because it shows off his figure well. Heh.
OH! And in one of the concept art pages he has this really cute outfit that I wish he had in the game.
Bottom left. Larry looks good in a vest IMO.
13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
Yeah! Most are really flattering for his figure...except that huge artist sweater. Oh man. He still looked comfy in it though. Big, baggy sweaters always feel comfy.
14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
See #12!
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Larry definitely seems like a boxers kinda guy.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
I...honestly don't know. He doesn't have a voice. ;3; I imagine he would sound like a bro, though. /helpful
2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
He's an easy talker, but an erratic one. He could be talking normally at one moment, then super fast and anxiously at another.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
Accent-wise, whatever a Californian sounds like? IDK... As for verbal tick, he contracts "want to" to "wanna", "going to" to "gonna", etc., and sometimes drops the "g" in "ing". He pretty much sounds like your usual teenager...only he's not a teenager.
4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
He speaks fluent English. Also, I can totally see him trying to pull something
like this.
5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
Nope! Larry doesn't really change anything, he acts the same around everyone. He might try to sound more suave around a girl that he likes though...and fail horribly at it.
6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
See, Larry thinks he's a good impromptu speaker. It's obvious that he just blurts out whatever comes to mind. But the thing is, he's not...really that good at it. Anyone who knows Larry knows to be careful around because he could blurt something stupid out that could ruin a situation, like say...when he's on the witness stand in court. 8|
7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
Eloquent, dear god eloquent. Larry hardly ever holds back his emotions or what's on his mind. And when he is trying to hide something, it's still pretty obvious because he can't be secretive at aaaall.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
I am so sorry Larry... He's not the sharpest tool in the shed, to put it as lightly as possible. He is, however, knowledgeable about useless things, like Pokemon! ... Except that's an advantage in Route, ohoho. I also like to think he's pretty street-smart where he falls short in book-smart.
2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
He thinks on his feet most of the time, but there have been multiple times where he actually made some plans to try to get the girl of the case, but he ended up coming off as a huge creeper. Examples: 3-5, where he sent a love letter to Iris to try to get her to go out with him, but the letter came off as blackmail because of the wording. The same thing happened in AAI-4 where he sent a love letter to Mindy (who was actually replaced by Oldbag).
He tries, okay?
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
Sometimes I think his mind is just elevator music or something. No really, I really don't know what's going through his head sometimes. But I'm pretty sure most of the time he doesn't really think and just blurts stuff out.
4. What kind of education has the character had?
I'm assuming he has at least a high school diploma considering some of the jobs that he got. I'm not sure if he's been to college like Edgeworth and Phoenix though.
5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
ALL ROMANCE ALL THE TIME, BABY. He actually seems pretty good at getting a girlfriend, but his only problem is keeping her. Since Route is related, he's also an expert in anything Gen I-related of Pokemon.
6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
Extrovert to the max. Larry loves talking to people and making friends!
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
Larry's default mood is laid-back and cheerful. He's a pretty happy guy when he's in a good mood. However, one of his defining traits is how emotionally unstable he tends to be. He can go from happy to suicidal and bawling his eyes out in the span of minutes. Thankfully he hasn't gone quite as far as to go suicidal in Route yet.
8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
He's definitely enthusiastic about it. When he got dumped in Johto? Most people would be confused and scared, but Larry? Best thing ever. Especially since he had just been dumped by another girl before he wound up in Johto. It was pretty much the best thing that could have happened to him in that moment.
9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
React, most definitely.
10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
This...is kind of a toughie. He's a mixture of both. He'll put up defensive walls like whoa if he knows he's done something wrong.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Larry probably has a really bad sense of humor. He'll laugh at like, anything, even if it's the most unfunny thing in the world. He cracks jokes a lot, but in the worst situations.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
None that I can think of...
13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
The entire 3-5 case. His inferiority complex came to light (probably from all the stress of his mentor dying so suddenly) when he hit the witness stand and realized how much trouble he really does cause for everyone involved with him. He can't ever get the girls that he loves, and he can't hold on to a job, and every job he loves gets snatched away from him in an instant. No matter how much he tries to change his ways, he's still the same Larry, and Edgeworth points out that he always turns away from his mistakes and doesn't actually act to try and make himself a better man.
With this sunk in, Larry went through a bout of serious depression for the rest of the case, dwelling on the claim that he's good for absolutely nothing. But everything turns around when he found out that he's actually wanted, and that the group actually likes his art. So from there on, Larry realizes that the one thing he's good at is art, regaining some of his confidence and happiness.
Honestly, Route has done wonders for him too. He's been feeling pretty good about himself since he got to Johto. If you don't count the fact that Dahlia just showed up anyway...
14. What does he fear?
That he'll never have a successful relationship. None of them have gone well, but he keeps trying because he wants to prove his greatest fear wrong.
15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
See above.
16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
Probably his inferiority complex. The most outgoing and funny people tend to have the lowest self-esteem.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
Larry's parents aren't mentioned at all in the series. Headcanon says he probably has a decent relationship with his parents, but they probably kicked him out of the house at an early age and won't give him any help with his life, especially financially.
Addendum: Doing a little canon-reviewing, I found out that Larry DOES mention his mother at one point. He says Bikini reminds him a lot of his mother in a negative fashion. Though to me, that just sounds like the typical "ugh you're too much like my mom" talk.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
Again, no siblings are mentioned.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
LARRY HAS NO FAMILY OKAY. /shot
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
Probably his childhood friends, Phoenix and Edgeworth. They've been through some pretty tough times together, and I think there's an unspoken bond between them, even though most of the time an appearance by Larry is pretty much the worst thing ever.
Edgeworth could be like, his estranged brother or something I don't even.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
Phoenix, definitely. They've literally known each other forever according to canon, and they've done a lot of things together. They've stuck together ever since Larry ended up in Johto as well. Even though Larry is really bad with practically self-disclosing his life story to strangers, he feels that he can actually tell Nick anything without fear of being judged. He feels that he can be himself, totally unguarded around Nick.
6. Does he have other close friends?
There's Edgeworth, of course, even though Edgeworth tends to pretend he doesn't know Larry most of the time. But other than that...not really? He's got friends of course, just none as close as his childhood friends.
7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
I like to think that he can make friends easily, once the other party can get past the initial awkwardness that is Larry. He's a well-meaning guy, and he's not one to put down others or try to make enemies (even though he can make enemies without trying).
8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
Friends for sure, since he doesn't seem to be that close with his actual family.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
DESPAIRINGLY SINGLE. He's been looking for a potential girlfriend ever since he set foot in Johto. And no, he has never been married, although he still believes that Iris would make the perfect wife. He wanted to marry her, and he still probably does. It will never happen though. 8|
10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
No, but god does he want to be in one.
11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
Well, the first crush of his that we know of was Cindy Stone whom he was dating in the very first case of the series. He really thought she was the one for him, but unfortunately she had some sugar daddies on the side, and ended up getting killed in the end. Still, Phoenix pointed out that she still cared for him deep down, because she hung on to the Thinker clock that Larry made for her.
His latest crush... Well, she is so very out of his league and it will never happen, but he still has a tiny little crush on Suzuki Adelheid. This is in Route, of course.
12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
Larry is actually a little shallow when it comes to what he's looking for. Appearance seems to be a big factor for him since he mostly ends up dating models and constantly goes on about the beauty of women when he gets all romantic, and I vaguely remember him almost outright saying that he was big on looks in Ace Attorney Investigations. Vaguely.
However, I don't think that looks are the deciding factor though. I think he'd want a girl with a good sense of humor, because he tends to crack a lot of jokes and would love someone who could laugh at anything like he does. He'd really like someone to just be himself around like he can be with his friends. Maintenance doesn't seem to be a factor for Larry, because he constantly showers his girlfriends with gifts and dates, even though he really can't afford it most of the time.
... Yep.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
No kids here! He doesn't really seem like the fatherly type either...
14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
He's constantly jealous of Phoenix and Edgeworth for always getting the cute female sidekicks. Oh, and I guess Apollo gets to be added to that now too because of Trucy, hahahaaa.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the
Kinsey scale?
Larry is as straight as a frickin' pole. There's no doubt in my mind that he's a 0 on the scale.
16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
I see Larry as one of the player types, honestly. He has a lot of one-night stands and has sex for fun, but I wouldn't say he's addicted. It's important to him, but he doesn't hold it in high regard and save it for "that person."
17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
Oh my god I don't even... I don't think about these things, seriously. HE'S INTO THE USUAL THINGS GUYS ARE INTO.
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (
zodiac of
choice) sign? How well does he fit type?
While I'm not sure what his western zodiac is, he was born in the Year of the Rooster. He definitely fits a lot of the negative traits, pff. Specifically egotistical, proud, and opinionated.
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
Larry doesn't really dabble in that kind of stuff.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
The main thing I can think of is standing up for his friends. Like I said earlier, Phoenix and Edgeworth are the closest people to family that he has, so he'll always stick up for them, even if he seems reluctant about it at first. He's always there, man.
Also, I bet he would totally adopt the
Bro Code.
4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
Probably indifferent.
5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
He might be a liiiittle prejudice when it comes to appearance (unfortunately), but he isn't going to outwardly express it. Other than that, there aren't any others...
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
Uh, I'm pretty sure Larry's pretty darn poor. He doesn't have a steady income because he's constantly switching jobs, but I guess he has enough to pay for his high-maintenance girlfriends.
2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
Somewhere in the lower/middle class? He's probably always been in that status too.
3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
After the events of Ace Attorney Investigations, Larry says that he was going to move to Paris to sell blue hotdogs with his new girlfriend Miharu. We're not sure if he actually went through with that though.
Other than that, he doesn't make any mention of his place. I'm assuming he has an apartment somewhere that he just uses to sleep in. He seems like a guy who spends a lot of time out and about, impressing girls.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
Presents for his current girlfriend, of course!
5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
Larry has never had a permanent job, because he's always gotten fired or just outright quit. But as long as he's in Johto, being a trainer is his main profession, haha.
6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
Other than hanging out with friends or girlfriends, Larry loves art! Many characters in canon constantly mock his artistic skills, but I still think he's pretty damn good. He even took art up as a job at one point, which you should have read by now. It seemed like the job that he appreciated the most, and the job that he may have just stuck with if his mentor hadn't tragically died. Even though he isn't pursuing a career in art anymore, he still draws quite a bit. I like to think that he's asked Phoenix to go out and just draw with him because Phoenix actually did go to art college.
Larry is a pretty good builder too. He made nifty Thinker clocks for himself and Cindy Stone...who ended up getting bludgeoned with it. After Cindy died, the clock was given to Mia as a token of his appreciation for believing in him, but Mia ended up getting killed with the clock too... Poor Larry, always being connected to murders.
Headcanon also believes that Larry loves going bar hopping.
7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
Larry seems like someone who just eats only when they're hungry. Or maybe he snacks a lot and has a high metabolism. He probably can't afford to have amazing food on a daily basis though.
Larry definitely drinks, but he's not an alcoholic. Although I bet he's drowned himself in it a few times after harsh breakups. In fact, he and Phoenix are headed for the next bar as soon as they find one.
Associations
Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is his favorite:
1. Color? Orange.
2. Smell? When something smells...it's usually the Butz.
3. Time of day? Night, baby!
4. Season? Summer, maybe?
5. Book? The Magic Bottle by Elise Deauxnim.
6. Music?
Larry's theme song (enjoy it getting stuck in your head)
7. Place? The Heavenly Hall, a location in Trials and Tribulations. It's probably not his favorite place, but...
8. Substance? Color pigments...!
9. Plant? Romantic red roses. Any kind of romantic bouquet, really.
10. Animal? Do Wobbuffets count.
