Character
Name: Larry Butz
Series: Ace Attorney
Timeline: After the events of Ace Attorney Investigations.
Canon Resource Links: Larry's AA Wiki Article, Canon Overview

Affiliation: Trainer.

Personality:

In a particular case in the series, a judge looks at a profile of Larry and asks, "Who is this useless-looking young man?" At first glance, this might actually seem like a fairly accurate representation of Larry, but if you dig a bit deeper, you'll realize that Larry Butz is actually a worthwhile, well-meaning guy.

The dominant trait about Larry is that he's somewhat of a hopeless romantic. The majority of his motivations revolve around impressing a girl, whether it's getting a specific job that "chicks dig, apparently", or breaking the bank to buy her whatever her heart desires. He's really a nice guy who means well, and will do anything to make someone he cares about happy, but he's extremely naive at the same time, and more often than not, it gets the better of him. Whenever his latest girlfriend gets tired of him (which tends to be pretty quickly), Larry is left confused and heartbroken that he would get dumped so easily. After an emotional episode, he moves on to his next girlfriend and new job, only to repeat the same cycle over and over.

Larry in general is quite emotional. One minute he'll be outgoing and friendly (if not a bit dorky) with plenty of jokes to crack, and the next, he'll be in tears and wanting to just die. Although it's not too hard to cheer him up, his mood swings can become a bit of an annoyance.

Larry also has a knack for running into trouble, whether it's being involved in murders or running his mouth at the least strategic of moments. Phoenix is even afraid to cross-examine him in court because he could easily cause the tides to turn in extremely unfavorable directions just by opening his mouth and saying the wrong things.

Even though his lawyer friends are reluctant to have him around whenever a case is going on (and for good reasons), Larry has proven that he can be useful to them. The best example was when he saved Edgeworth from receiving a guilty verdict by manning up and testifying, even when the judge had already passed judgment.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths: To be honest, Larry doesn't have many strengths. He's admitted himself. However, one thing Larry is pretty good at is art. In Bridge to the Turnabout, he takes up a job as Elise Deauxnim's "apprentice", becoming a picture book artist. Though most people aren't impressed by his illustrations, they're actually quite good. He also created two Thinker statues with built-in clocks before the first case of the series.

Larry is also extremely loyal to those close to him, willing to stand up for his friends when they are in trouble.

Weaknesses: Where to begin, where to begin? First of all, Larry has extremely bad luck. Whenever a murder occurs, Larry's usually there to be involved in it, even to be framed for it. He isn't good at very much, romantically and work-wise, thus he has a knack for moving between girlfriends and occupations very often. While he has good intentions, he usually can't pick up on critical cues (the most common one would be saying things when he really should just keep his mouth shut), only ends up making things worse.

Basically, whenever anything bad happens, Larry is one of the usual suspects. This why he has earned the saying, "When something smells, it's usually the Butz."

Pokemon
Starter: Wobbuffet.

Password: Salmon Riceballs.

First Person Sample:

[A sheepish-looking and clearly distressed Larry appears on the screen. And when Larry looks sheepish and distressed, it can't be good. He also...has a nice bruise forming just under his left eye?]

Hey, uh...Nick? Edgey, even? I've got some bad news.

[Of course.]

Y'know how I said I got a hot date a couple days ago? Well uh... [Tears begin to well up in his eyes.] I think she was actually a member of those uh...Team Rocket guys! She had me go into a PokéCenter thing to collect some Pokémon that she said were hers, and when I gave them to her, she punched me in the face and took off! C-CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?! Wh-why me? I thought what we had was special, but she was just using me!

[He whimpers a little bit.] So now I'm being questioned about the theft of these Pokémon-th-these Pokémon that the police use are scary, man, but the officers are smokin', if you get what I mean-and I'm probably going to be stuck in jail for a while...

What I'm trying to say here is...I think I might need a little help.

Third Person Sample:

Larry sighed as he sat down on a bench in a New Bark Town park. It was late evening, and he had just been released from the police department hours earlier. Not even a week into his Great Pokémon Adventure and he had 1) already gained and lost a girlfriend and 2) already been held in for questioning for some crime that he got framed for. He sighed again and rubbed the bruise on his cheek. It seemed that wherever he went, trouble seemed to follow. When would he ever have a successful relationship? When would anything go right for him?

He brooded about this for a few minutes before searching for a good stick to draw in the dirt with. It had been a while since he quit his job as an artist, but he still liked to draw every now and then. He needed something to do to get his mind off of the drama, at least. Vigorously scraping at the dirt for as long as he could before he lost what leftover light from the sun to see with, he produced a doodle of himself and his friends, Phoenix and Edgeworth, with their respective Pokémon. He smirked at the drawing, quite proud of his work. It seemed that whenever he was down, his friends were able to cheer him up. He wished they weren’t so far away...but that didn’t mean he couldn’t catch up.

This brought a spark of life into the mopey Larry, who stood up, raising a fist to the new star-filled sky with a determined look on his face.

“Right, starting tomorrow, I’m gonna find Nick and Edgey! I don’t care how far away they are, bros gotta stick together! I can do this--!”

But before he could finish his motivational speech, the lone Pokéball in his jacket pocket flashed, and a large Pokémon appeared...right on top of his drawing.

“Wobba Wobba!” It shouted, as if it had heard its trainer’s speech and was in complete agreement. Larry could only gawk at the display.

“W-Wobbuffet! YOU’RE RUINING MY WORK OF ART!” He screamed, pointing to the already smeared picture under the Pokémon’s feet. Wobbuffet stared at the ground before shuffling to the side. The drawing was practically gone by then.

“Wobba...Wobbuffet.” It replied, sounding like it felt sorry for what it had done, but utterly oblivious at the same time.

Larry sighed, feeling bad himself. He then patted the Pokémon on the head. “H-Hey, don’t worry about it. It’s not like it was gonna stay there forever anywhere, right? Besides, I can always make a new one some other day. Plus! We can’t worry about a ruined drawing right now! We gotta get ready for our big adventure tomorrow!”

“Wobba!” the Pokemon replied, perking up instantly.

Larry grinned at his partner. They were off to a rough start, sure, but that didn’t mean things couldn’t get better. The real adventure was going to begin in the morning, and the pair weren’t going to let anything get in their way.

Even if trouble was sure to follow them every step of the way.
