Brendon awoke the next morning to the loud, annoying sound of his alarm clock. He rolled off the couch and onto the ground. He walked up stairs into the kitchen.
“I do not want to do this,” he said.
“You have to sweetie, sorry.” His mom was cooking breakfast. He sat down at the table and started playing with his napkin. “It’s not going to be as bad as you’re thinking it is going to be. I know you’re starting Senior year and you won’t know anyone, but you’ll get to know people,” she said, placing eggs and toast on his plate.
Kenneth emerged from his room rubbing his eyes. “You didn’t have to cook breakfast, you know?”
“Well, you’re doing so much for us. It’s really the least I can do,” Brendon’s mom said as she put some food on a plate and handed it to him.
“I’m going to school,” Brendon announced as Kenneth. Who told Brendon to call him Ken, sat next to him.
“You didn’t touch your food,” his mother said.
“I’m not really hungry.”
--------------
Brendon walked into his new school, clutching his backpack straps. He walked through the glass doors and looked around at the kids walking and running to their lockers, he looked for a sign for the office or anything and couldn’t find one anywhere.
“Hey kid, you lost?” A boy leaning against the lockers in front of Brendon asked. He stood straight up, pulling his long sleeve shirt over his arm and crossing them. He walked around Brendon. “Do you need help?”
“Yeah, I guess. Where’s the office?”
“Right over there,” he pointed down the hall.
Brendon started to walk away but before he got a few steps away the boy followed him.
“So, what are you doing after school?” the boy asked.
“Uh, nothing.” Brendon looked at the boy confused.
“Meet me at the A doors after school.” The boy flashed a smile and push some of his chocolate brown hair away from his eyes, waiting for an answer.
“Okay,” Brendon answered still confused.
“Alright, see you then.” The boy walked away and Brendon went to the office.
-----------
Brendon’s first day of school was a complete disaster. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong. He had stains on his shirt and pants from where he spilled food on himself at lunch, he could already tell he wasn’t going to make friends as easy as he was told. Most of his teachers seemed like they should be working in the military, so his grades were going to be low. But those are just things he learned from the first day, he decided to wait and see what happens before he fully decided if he likes the school.
Brendon stood by the A doors as the teenagers rushed around him to get to their buses on time. Brendon texted his mom saying he was going to hang out with a friend for a couple minutes after school and he would just walk home. Which wasn’t that hard to do, so she agreed.
He looked around for the boy that he had meet earlier, trying to remember what color his shirt was or something so he could recognize him.
“Hey kid.”
“Oh, hey.” Brendon turned to see the boy.
“What’s up?”
“Nothing.”
“Oh, well you wanna have some fun?”
“Uh?” Brendon was confused, again. He was getting sick of this kid messing with his head.
“You want to party?” The boy raised his eyebrows and smirked.
Brendon figured with all the stuff he has been through the last couple of years a little partying was due for him so he nodded and smiled.
They walked out of the school. “What’s your name?” Brendon finally asked.
“Ryan. Yours?”
“Brendon.”
“Nice to meet you Brendon,” Ryan stopped at a purple, small car and opened the passenger door for Brendon to climb into.
They drove fast down the side streets until Ryan stopped, “ From here we have to walk.”
