6.13. "Communication. It's the first thing we really learn in life. Funny thing is, once we grow up, learn our words and really start talking, the harder it becomes to know what to say. Or how to ask for what we really need."

When Taylor slammed the front door behind her as she arrived home that evening, she didn't intend to slam it so hard, but man it felt satisfying. After trying for close to two weeks to get a moment alone with Jason when she wasn't at work, trying to get ready for work, or exhausted after a hard day at work, she had reached breaking point. She was fed up with Tim Riggins monopolising his time. She was fed up with beer and football, even if she had grown up with it surrounding her. And she was fed up the pair of them being so idle they probably had Homer Simpson butt dents on the sofa for the amount of time they spent there. She didn't stop to kick her shoes off at the door like she did most other nights after work, she just proceeded to stalk into the living room where - expectedly - she found Tim and Jason planted in front of the sofa with some beer, peanuts, and football reruns on the TV. They were in the middle of cheering for a touchdown by a team Taylor didn't even damn well recognise, so she stepped up and smacked her hand against the power button and shut the TV off. She spun around, hands on her hips as she stood there still in her cop uniform and just glared at them, almost as if she was challenging them to turn it back on with the remote. Both men just stared back at her, blinking as if they had just been sucked into a vortex of insanity. Tim was the one who decided to try to pipe up first, but before any words of protest could even come out of his mouth, she snatched the remote control out of his hand and gave him a small smack in the head with it. "Do not even say a word, Riggins," she warned through gritted teeth.

She started to pace back and forth between them, taking in the sight and then snorting in aggravation. She soon stopped though and pointed accusingly at Jason. "Ya' might be cripple and wheelchair bound, but that ain't given ya' no damn fuckin' reason to be a slob and wastin' ya' time away rottin' ya' brain on more football! Evenin' after evenin' I come home from work and y'all sat here doin' nothin'!" She turned on Tim then, shooting him an aggravated look. "And ya' might be 'bout ready to land ya' ass in jail without fightin' it, but ya' ain't there yet! Ya' pull ya' fuckin' weight 'round here or ya' can fuck off back to Dillon! I know y'all gotta make up for lost time, but ain't none of that my fault, so I ain't gonna pay for it. Til ya' grow tits and a uterus and buy him a big shiny rock, I'm the one who's gonna be inflictin' myself with him as his wife, and I ain't settlin' for no feelin' like I gotta make an appointment to speak to him in between kick offs and trips to the fridge for booze!"

There was still no time for them to answer before she was cutting in again, blue eyes piercing Jason determindly. "Jason, baby, I love ya', but right now I just wanna smack ya' stupid with that remote control. I've been tryin' to find the right time, but if I ain't found it yet, then maybe there is no right time and I'm too fuckin' exhausted to deal with this anymore. Riggins, ya' keep ya' damn mouth shut. Jason, I'm pregnant. Ya' gonna deal with this QB touchdown right here," she pointed to her stomach, "before I give either of ya' back that remote, and if so much as one bottle of booze is cracked open in my presence, I'll shove it so far up ya' ass that you'll get a whole new appreciation for cripple from the waist down."

By this point Jason was just gaping at her, and beside him, Tim's face was almost identical. At first he had been stunned his usually placid fiancee was bitching him out, seemingly without reason. He had seen Taylor fired up, but this was different. This had a thread to it he was missing, and although that thread could probably be obvious to the outside world, Jason had a sense that he had just been smacked in the face with a iron beam. He blinked a few times, but that wasn't going to be enough to slice through the shock. He even started to think he maybe fell asleep during the game, or got real drunk real quick, and now this was some surreal dream sequence where maybe Jim Carrey as God was soon going to appear and start telling him he was a loser in Ace Ventura speak.

"Yeah, I know..." Taylor replied, even if Jason hadn't actually said anything. He didn't need to, she knew exactly how he was feeling. The bite had gone out of her tone, even if she could still feel the aggravation bubbling under the surface. "Ya' gonna have to pull it together, QB. I need ya'. I need ya' like ya' wouldn't believe."

"But we... but I... but you..." Jason knew it was unintelligble and he couldn't quite form the thoughts he needed to get out. Beside him, Tim's gaze was bouncing back and forth between his friends, but in a smart move, he remained dead silent. "It was... it..." He gave a tiny shake of his head. He needed just a few more moments before he could pull anything together.

Taylor sighed, her head dropping down so she could look at her shoes. She was damn tired, just wanting a bath and to go to bed. All day, she had resolved to tell Jason tonight no matter what. But as her day began to more and more suck in more and more chaos with things going wrong left and right, she had gotten riled up, aiming all the emotions directly at Jason and Tim. It was maybe a little out of left field, but they had been infuriatingly idle lately. She didn't think it was too much to ask just to have some time with him. After this, they would have other things they needed to talk about. "We probably were a few days out in startin' to use condoms again when I was sick with the food poisonin'. We thought we were doin' the right thing like we were 'sposed to, but I think we got a bit outta whack with the timin'. Ain't no other explanation. We've been safe. Just... human error. Mistake..."

This was the wake up call Jason needed to snap him out of the shock. "Y-You think it's a mistake?" was the first thing that fell out of his mouth before he could stop it. "You- are you saying you don't want it? Is that why... is this... you aren't happy about it," he realised as he looked up at her and over her face. He was reached for her hand and hooked his fingers into hers, figuring if there was a link there, he would stop feeling the sudden sensation that he had the floor whipped out from under him.

With this, Tim stood up and scraped his hand through his hair. "I'm just gonna..." He pointed behind him to the door with his thumb and two beats later, he was hastily retreating through it to leave the pair of them alone before things got too heavy. He was already at risk of having a cop boot up his ass, he didn't want to fan that flame even more, despite feeling a strange crushing weight in his gut at the look Jason just got on his face as the realisation dawned on him.

Taylor looked down at their joined hand, Jason's still semi-paralysed fingers tucked inside hers. She gave his hand a soft squeeze and then sat down in Tim's vacated seat, perching on the end of it and hunching forward as she turned to meet Jason's gaze. "I ain't sure how I feel, darlin'. I'm still just as shocked as ya' are right now. I've just wanted to be able to tell ya', but ya' made it real hard for me these past coupla weeks. I've been flounderin'. Every time I try to think 'bout it, I just get overwhelmed with this horrible fear and memories of last time. I ain't ready to be knocked up again right now, but that's a choice that's gone and been taken outta my hands."

Jason wrapped his arms around her in a secure hug, pressing some kisses to her cheek. For a little while, he just held her, trying to gather his thoughts. The room was silent without the TV, and it was almost defeaning. A contrasting mix of emotions were already building up inside him and they started to make him feel like he had a huge lump stuck in his throat trying to prevent him from speaking. "I get it, baby, I do..." he mumbled, knowing his memories of that horrible time were still fresh in his mind too. "And I'm sorry we fucked up with our timing. I'm sorry this is... I ain't even sure what I'm supposed to do or say to fix any of this. There ain't anything. I just... two weeks? You've know for two weeks?"

"Ya've had ya' head up ya' ass," Taylor offered, but she squeezed his arm to reassure him that she wasn't going to hold it against him, despite her angry outburst earlier. Truth was, she was too tired to maintain emotions like that. "Don't do that again, alright? I ain't wantin' to be married to no fuckin' couch potato slob who I come home to every day to see him with a beer in his hand, eyes locked on the screen. What y'all been thinkin' with that, anyway?"

Jason had no answer for that. He was going to say something, but he came up with nothing. "Boredom?" he finally offered sheepishly. "I'm sorry. I'm really, really sorry, baby. But I... I think we should talk about this? Ain't anyone else here now. We can talk, you can tell me everything. I'll stop the lazy slob routine, I promise."

"What happened t'Riggins findin' a job to pay us back, anyway? What happened to ya' gettin' work too, by the way? Thought ya' had connections?" Taylor asked tiredly as she pulled away and rubbed her eyes. She stood up, all the muscles in her body aching from her hard, exhausting day. "I ain't wantin' t'talk 'bout it right now. I'm tired, I had a bad day. I wanna get a bath and go to bed. I waited two weeks. Ya' can wait 'til I'm ready," she told him, looking down at him with an unreadable expression.

Jason wet his lips, feeling the guilt burn through him sharply. "Want me to come with you?" he offered in a small voice, reaching for her hand again when he felt a horrible tiny sensation that he was teetering on the edge of losing her here.

There was hesitation, without a doubt. Taylor had doubts and they were scaring her. But she swallowed them down and nodded. "Yeah, okay," she agreed hoarsely.
