What the hell is wrong with people?

I rarely do this, but god, this has pissed me off enough.

What the bleeding fuck is people's problem with gay people? Why is it acceptable or cool to insult people by calling them fags? Why do people not get irritated when people call things 'ghey' (as if changing the spelling makes it any better. You still mean the original derogatory thing, ( Read more... )

For me, it's just incomprehensible, because I don't understand how "gay" could be an insult, because it doesn't have any negative connotations. I get angry because even some of my friends (smart and nice people too!) use it as a derogatory term. And I get funny looks when I get angry at people for calling people/things "fags/gay". Sometimes I think people wonder if I'm gay because I get defensive and snappy when intolerant people use it as some sort of horrible insult. It doesn't bother me that much, but it still pisses me off that they assume that you're one of the "bad people" if you don't think that all the gay people should be rounded up and sent to an island to be blown up. (Which is what someone said!)

You put my feelings in a much more eloquent way, though, so I think I'll be referring back to this in the future. =)

Proper use of brass knuckles will prevent your hand from becoming a ball of scar tissue.

The linguistic purist in me is annoyed that the original meaning of "gay" has been utterly destroyed, but that's beside the point on this post...

Maybe I just have to deal with immature teens more than intolerant imbeciles, but the thing that really pisses me off is when I call someone on it, and they defend themselves by claiming it's just a phrase people use to mean loser, and not intentional gay-bashing. What the hell?

Oh, not to mention the people who apparently have an ingrained reflex to start cracking off-color jokes whenever someone confronts them about sexism, gay or otherwise.

I tend to confront that sort of thing with an approach along the lines of "And you are proud of this why, exactly? Just because you don't mean to gay-bash does not make you any less of a bigoted asshole when you do it."

The cracking of off-color jokes is a simple attempt to divert the topic before anyone notices what a prick the person in question is. Call them on that, too.
