All right, let's try to put some longer stuff out there. I miss you guys and the job isn't going to get any easier anytime soon, so I better get my g__d___ priorities straight
( Read more... )
Ya might do well just buying tons of bulk D&D Miniatures (y'know, these: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Product.aspx?x=dnd/products/dndmin/250680000 the pre-painted plastic ones). That's what our DM uses. :) We also found that when fighting hordes, such as 10+ goblins, we use a container of bulk multicolored beads. (For example, we place down green beads where the goblins are, and if one gets injured and not killed, it's swapped with a red bead.) You can get this at Michaels for $6 or $8 or so. :)
Hope those help. Sure they're not as nice looking as getting lots of pewter minis and painting them, but this takes a lot less time!
Yeah, I don't have the time to paint the minis, really; but one of our guys is an avid painter so I'm starting to hand important recurring baddies off to him.
Deus, I am using the prepainted plastic ones -- pick them up from ebay, mostly, for pretty cheap.
I've been forced to use the beads/pennies trick but when I can I use heavier cardstock, photoshop and homemade pogs as Head suggests.
*nod* The pogs is an interesting idea. I'll have to recommend that to Mike (our DM) and I've already sent him a link to MasterPlan cause that's hot stuff right there. We're in a 3.5ed campaign but the map designer and notes would be a huge help to him.
One day, I'll get into a 4th Ed game. *grin* We're looking at Pathfinder for our next game, but our DM is really opposed to 4th Ed "unless they release a Star Wars setting for it." And, since we really don't know anybody else who's willing to run a game (and I don't feel I have storytelling skills yet or I'd try to run my own!), we're at Mike's mercy. It's ok, he runs fantastic games with excellent stories and is very, very good at adapting the story on the fly when we do the total opposite of what he planned. ;)
One caveat: D&D Insider subscription, at least a one-time, is necessary. That imports all the monsters, traps, hazards, magic items, etc into MasterPlan's libraries; and that's the real timesaver
( ... )
It does map layout in theory, but I haven't dug that deep. You need to belong to a yahoogroup for tiles or something like that; and since I'm just starting to get into the tactical side of things it hasn't been high on my list of priorities.
Yes, I now keep the laptop open at the game table. We've had few enough spillages in my time with the lads that it just makes sense, and I succumb to the pseudienvironmentalist fallacy that electronics are better than paper.
Seriously though, it's b/c I'm so accustomed to making notes on the laptop during work that it's easier for me to do so at the table as well. Also, I can (in theory) keep images, music, etc on the machine. I was heading in that direction with the aborted African campaign and will be looking in that direction here on out.
I totally agree on starting with a combat. I 've been trying to set things up lately so the lead up to the big encounter ends just as the session does, so we pick it up right from there (with a little recap to start off with).
