I love my honda civic hybrid, but it does use a different hybrid technology than the prius, and doesn't get as many mpg (I average 36-42 mpg depending on the temperature). I think the civic hybrid is about $5-10k more than a standard civic though... and a reg. civic still gets good mileage.
We were considering Hondas for their excellent reputation along with the Prius. We ended up getting neither of those and going for a new Hyundai instead.
If you are looking for a used car, I think Honda would be a better idea as the Hyundais have improved their reputation significantly in recent years.
Well, I can recommend that you NOT get a Pontiac Grand Am. Or any Pontiac. Or--heck, I just wouldn't buy any "American" car. (I say "American" because given that's defined by where the shareholders live, not where those suckers are actually manufactured...)
That said, I've always liked Honda Civics, though they apparently vary a bit by year.
Ford Focus Hatchback (!!!!)takaalApril 28 2010, 14:14:06 UTC
I (and my mom) both have 2007 Ford Focus ZX3s (no, wait, she has a ZX5). If you can pick one up used (idiot Ford stopped the hatchback model, and you Do Not Want the sedan. The hatchback is really a Volvo, and runs like it.), I *highly* recommend it. Low mileage, low maintenance, and handles great. The ZX5 is better if you're going to be regularly going in and out of the back seat. The driver's seat is adjustable; my 6'4" husband (with all his height in his torso) can drive it comfortably without hitting his head; my 5'2" mother can adjust it so she's able to see easily, reach the pedals, and not worry about the airbag hitting her in a bad way. This turned out to be key; she started with a 2001 ZX3, and walked away from a high-speed, head-on collision with powder burns on her arms from the airbag - but no other injuries. The car was totaled - and she went right to the dealership and asked for The Exact Same Thing, which she had for five years, then went up to the ZX5 because she wanted more doors - there was nothing wrong with ZX3#2
( ... )
Apparently I went to high school with him. As long as he stays where he is I don't mind letting him talk, it's not like anyone else on my list will agree : ) If he gets mouthier then I'll remove him.
Sorry about the car, but thank goodness you're okay!
I bought Hyundai Elantras for two of our three kids (the middle one hasn't learned to drive yet, despite our nagging). They were in the $15K range, and have been great cars for their daily college commutes.
