15) Are you registered to vote?
It is compulsory to vote in Australia. Once you get on the Electoral Roll, you can be fined if you don't turn up at a polling booth for a Federal Election.
However by some quirk of the law, if you manage to avoid getting on the Electoral Roll in the first place, you cannot be penalised retrospectively.
I left Australia in 1993 and got off the Electoral Roll. Since I returned to Australia in 2003 I have thrown away all the letters I received at my Melbourne apartment asking me who I was and threatening me to register. Now that I have moved to Brisbane it will be even easier to avoid the electoral gestapo because I am sharing accomodation and my name is not on the lease.
I have so far avoided one federal election and I am pleased about this because I hate being forced to vote. I don't care who's in power and I believe anyone who thinks voting in a two party system makes any difference is just being silly.
So no, I'm not registered to vote even though I should be.
Here endeth my political statement.
