I'd go Hyundai or Kia if you want to keep payments low and have a good quality car. Honda's not bad, but pricier....

Kias are terrible cars. I can't tell you how many times I've had to change a timing belt on my friend's because of faulty lines.

If you can live without a keyless door entry, you cannot ever go wrong with a Ford Escort. They've been labled one of the most durable and reliable cars on the road today. They're inexpensive to fix (I think swapping a used transmission into the car costs $600 and that includes labor), parts are readily available and they're great on gas. I have a 93 Escort that has no shocks, a slipping transmission and a small coolant leak Ive yet to find and the damned thing runs just as good as the day it was made.

that' because your 93 escort is predominantly mazda.

This may be after the fact but I thought I'd put my two cents in. As for Kia, they are the worst car company on record as far as reliability goes. You may save yourself some cash in the beginning, that's about it. Hundai is a little better if you get a newer model, and they have something like a 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain warrarnty. Nissans and Mitsubishi's are generally good cars, most come with keyless. I would reccomend a Maxima or Altima.

VWs are pretty expensive. another important thing to consider is your insurance payment. so once you have a list of makes, models, and model years i would phone your insurance company and get quotes for those cars. keeping the monthly payment to $250 is meaningless when you don't specify the term of the financing and how much you have cash to put down on the car. your credit rating will also effect this too.

bottom line, cars suck. walk or take public transportation if you can. :)

I have a Saturn and I believe the lease was $150/month back in 1998 when my parents got it, absolutely basic model so I don't know how it works with other options, but it's a solid, dependable car in my experience. You're not getting any frills out of it but it does what it's supposed to do and gets pretty good gas mileage (30 mpg) while doing it.

I'd also look into a Honda Civic, I'd feel comfortable with either option.

I'd go with the Honda, they've always had little to no problems for me, and when I would have problems, they were like now when I've had the car for 8 years and they were very minor. You take care of them and they will do well for you.
