I love Neal here, so lost and hurting and afraid to allow himself to believe that he truly makes a difference. It was a perfect idea to wait for Neal to come home. And a perfect story to share during the Holidays ♥

Oh, this is amazing. I had forgotten how tenuous Neal's freedom was (and, I guess still is). Your descriptions of prison were harrowing; and the four cards fit in so well here as Neal's price of protection.

Christmas at the Burke's (with everyone) was a very nice present for him; and the other four cards a reminder that he does matter.

This is now one of my favorite Christmas stories - thank you! I love the way you show Neal's transition from apathy to the gradual realization that he is important to these people, and that he does have a home to come to.
