Embarrassing moments: Diving woe

May 05, 2018 12:08

The moment someone asked, I knew I was in for it. I could not dive. I had tried. It was just so hard. I mean, it always ended in a belly flop. We got into two lines, and started diving ( Read more... )

What a wonderfully told story! This is the best kind of embarrassment experience - you began to turn it around and accomplished it. The beginning of conquering!

Fabulous! Diving was not my thing either, but you finally mastered it. Good for you! It is so embarrassing when others seem to be able to do something so easily and we struggle with it, isn't it? Wonderful first entry. Can't wait to read more.

Oh gosh, that's always tough when others seem to grasp skills easily and we have to work harder at it. For me, that was math and chemistry. I always had to ask a lot more questions than other people did, and it was always hard. But I got better, with lots of work! That's great that you (or this character, if this happens to not be you) got better with lots of practice, too!!

I know just how that feels! I never liked doing dives, although I eventually got good enough at them to pass to the next level. But my embarrassing moment came when our swimming class was giving a demonstration for our parents at the end of the swimming session. I had a huge bellyflop that took the air out of me. The worst part was when I swam to the surface and heard some parents laughing. To this day, I can't believe they laughed at a little kid in pain.

Then again, it might have looked a little funny.

How are your dives now?

That struggle - with the trial and error, it's all part of getting better at something. Which doesn't make it any easier, or less embarrassing, when you are going through it.

I'm glad that you had something else, Layney, who was going through the same thing. Hopefully the two of you were able to keep working together to get better at diving.

:"On my turn, I took a deep breath, and sprang into the water. In a perfect..... Bellyflop. I came to the surface. " - I enjoyed how you structured this reveal. You have a good instinct for storytelling.
