Tonight at the store this guy wanted something that Bee was standing in front of and he said that jokey thing some assholes say to old people, "Excuse me young man! I need to get something on that shelf". Bee has a naturally bald head - been like that since he was 22. From behind it isn't unusual for people to think he's older than he is, but this ( Read more... )

I give books. Signed books can be come by at independents here for no added cost, but those impress my Mom more than anyone else. My MIL and SMIL just want a good read.

I'm in a similiar boat this year. Nothing for my Mom or my MIL but plates Emily made at school. And for my SMIL I have a quilt (long promised). I just really don't know what to get them - nothing striking read that they will like and no money to spend on someething fancy.

My dad asked for a book of photos or drawings from the kids. So I took a bunch of their drawings, photocopied them (our scanner makes copies also) and then took an old picture book that wasn't in good condition (and we had a second, better copy of), carefully removed the pages leaving the endpapers intact (you can do this with new books because they just glue in the pages) and then glued in the photocopied drawings to make a book. It's pretty homemade looking and not the sort of think for everyone, but I think he will like it.

I called Mom this morning and she said she loves that "World's Greatest Grandma" stuff. I pointed out that my brother and his kids already get her that stuff and she said no- she's buys it for herself! I always thought grandparents cringed when they saw that crap coming!

We're off to buy this flowery "grandmother" locket I saw at Target that I didn't get because I thought she'd think it was dorky.

I make calendars with kid pictures in them. Grandma's love that stuff. And they're useful! Who doesn't need a calendar?
