so there is a theory going around :
http://hollywoodgrrl.livejournal.com/129791.html - read to find out what i'm talking about his this entry! but i have HAVE to stress that these thoughts are nothing against the writers of the theory - i love them for making me really ponder my show!
i really enjoy reading this theory and all its intricate parts but i honestly don't agree with one big aspect of it: Gene as a Jailer or as some master of purgatory (that at least sounds to christian to me is which disturbing to my brain). i think that maybe Gene is being some kind of support structure for maybe lost souls - stuck between life and death. so let me just blab a bit but again! i should say that this isn't a criticism against the folks who put the theory together.
so yeah...if Gene was a Jailer his character would be fixed, he would not be able to go through character adjustments which he honestly does. his character, manner of policing has adjusted through his spending time with both Sam and Alex. he is very cleaver and is working hard to be able to continue to be apart of the modern policing world - in ways that Ray could never. i think the simple fact that he is investigating the masons instead of just joining the corrupt means that he has gotten better - perhaps the Gene we first met when Sam dropped into 1973 may have joined just to save his skin rather than fight back.
i mean this might all just be me trying to justify Gene - i can't help that he is my favorite character and i do not want him to be some jailer or some iffy character. i love the idea of him protecting/being charged of taking care of both Sam and Alex because if it is true that say Maya died and Molly was killed then they would need a very powerful figure to hang on to. and when Gene said "you're one of us" maybe he too was a lost soul at one time and know takes care of the new ones - like (just as an example!) what if Gene was one and Harry Woolf took care of him but at the same time you learn from your "protector" - like Sam learned from Gene to trust his gut - so Gene learned from Harry's downfall in Life on Mars so he is using that to keep himself from becoming corrupt with the masons.
when Alex first lost her family Gene was there and so she takes herself back to that time so maybe she can save some love ones to maybe make up for not being able to protect Molly - but since we cannot change the past Alex could not save her parents (and deep down she knew that) so she saved Shaz. Meanwhile we have Gene who is being her foundation, protecting her from the harm she puts herself in and maybe (back to the theory) it is him erasing and maybe it is alex too because the memories of "the future" are too painful to return to and Gene knows she is not strong enough yet to face them.
but again this just could be me protecting my idea of Gene because as i said i really do love his character - he's certainly given me many new swear words to play with, a character to play with writing and other things.
so these are my thoughts - and maybe i'll have more but i really should focus on my LOM fic...otherwise its not going to get anywhere! :D
cheers - and many thanks for reading!
