Sam could love them and understand that they were a family but he never understood how tentative a hold you could have on those you cared about, despite of and because of their line of work. I really loved the 'slice of life' feel to this, just having Dean's reactions to the girl and the waitress, nothing happening with them, just living his life.
Your really describe this place physically and emotionally very effectively.
