Random Bits of Goodness

-- Marvel Omega had an extremely awesome update of its X-Men line of titles this week, 3 of which had my name attached to them. X-MEN # 45, NEW X-MEN # 2, and ASTONISHING X-MEN # 1 (which I just helped to plot) are all available for reading nirvana as we speak, so hop to it people. And while you're there, be sure to check out the debut issues of ( Read more... )

-- Speaking along similar lines, has anyone picked up the first issue of the new Hawkeye and Mockingbird series? I'm avoiding all this "Heroic Age" crap like the plague, but a new Hawkeye series (written by someone whose initials aren't BMB) has my interest piqued.

To be honest, this is very much Mockingbird's book. From reading the first issue I get the impression that Hawkeye is going to be a supporting character, despite being named first on the title.

Sorry Munn, despite how you deny it. Bendis is a great dialogue man. As is Chris Claremont.

The great problem for me is that while the dialogue is good it is not unique. I never get the sense that a certain character is saying it, it all seems interchangeable.

Which is something I find very bizarre because in the Ultimate Universe he does give each character a unique voice with his dialogue.

I've said it before but 616 Bendis and Ultimate Bendis seem to be a completely different person.

That's a good point. Dialogue never bothered or bothers me in his Ultimate Spidey work. It's just about everything else 616. I don't feel it's Iron Man saying something, or Cap or Spidey. You could switch any of the bubbles around and still get no feeling of it being said character. It's like a mad lib game. Fill in the blanks of who said what, and you'll always win since any of them could fit any character.

Gary, of course all the dialogue is going to sound the same. It's Bendis' voice that he is using. What you are arguing is idiotic.

Diving into that X-Line update at MO as we speak, top notch stuff from all around so far.

Know exactly what you mean about Bendis comments. Makes me wonder sometimes if the people that say that actually have real life conversations.

obviously they only have conversations with themselves... in which Bendis is right in-line. haha

Though I do have to thank Bendis for helping me to quit reading comics, and save up my financial resources for real stuff.

I have more real life conversations than you do with your mother boy. So, why don't you get your head out of your ass, and actually listen to how people speak before you open your fat mouth.

See, here's the thing about scripted dialog: It's not supposed to sound like real life conversations for a number of reasons ( ... )

This coming from you is laughable Derrick since in none of your writings have I seen a character act in character, or have I read a story of yours with a plot that made a lick of sense.

In Derrick's life, he's accomplished far more than you, both personally and professionally. He's an extremely talented writer who has earned the respect of numerous people and whose books draw in pretty good figures. He's been reviewed and interviewed by a number of folks in the indie book scene. You have no such claim.

Also, and here's a very important fact, Derrick sticks to his convictions, just like you often brag about doing. Except he's able to do it without alienating everyone around him.

The people you insult are your betters in every sense of the word. You think we're nothing? Fine by me. That makes you even less than nothing.

Steve generally makes a good point about dialogue. A character's dialogue should, in a way, reflect their thought process. Batman is a methodical, decisive, and stoic character, therefore type to think - and maybe even act - before he speaks. Spider-Man's a little different. He's sort of stuck in his own head a lot and his dialogue reflects that - funny observations, doesn't always express complete ideas, impulsive.

Captain America? Diplomatic, impartial, and open (like some would argue a Democracy should be). Beast? Artistic, scientific, and passionate. Their conversations as characters should incorporate these concepts and ideas, and their dialogue should reflect this. When thinking of dialogue or characterization one should always think "perspective."
