I just received my Non-Offensive, Non-Denominational, Non-Exclusionary Holiday Season-Day gift from
applepieisgood. And it is thus!
Fujifilm Finepix s1500fd
Yes, my friends, a camera! It's still nowhere near a full-on DSLR, but as far as point-and-shoots go, it's features are nothing to sneeze at. Unless of course you have the H1-Pig-Flu, in which case I will ask you to not sneeze on the camera and sully up the front lens element.
The camera records images at up to 10 megapixels. The lens has a focus range of 5.9 to 70.8 mm (12x zoom.) It has aperture control (f/2.8 to f/6.4 in wide and f/5 - f/8 in tele; not a big range, but pretty good for what it is) and shutter speed control (from 1/2000th of a second to 8 full seconds, indeed a wide range as far as I'm concerned.) Along with those controllable settings, it has several other features standard for point-and-shoots, such as ISO exposure control, white balance settings, video record mode, et al.
I do still want to eventually get an SLR, but I just really wanted something to replace my poor 5-year-old low-end point-and-shoot. And so I am quite happy with what I got!
Here follows some of pictures I took at a nearby park while I was playing with some of the settings. They're not great, but this is the first camera I've had that lets me set exposure, aperture and shutter speed. I'm hoping what I learn with this camera will make getting used to an SLR easier when I get one down the road.
The pool in the center of my apartment complex. My apartment complex is a relic from the late 60's...
Lake (and tree trunk) at
Riverview Park.
Screwing with shutter speed. The top shot had a slower shutter speed (1/400 sec.) and the bottom had a faster shutter speed (1/1250 sec.) The bottom shot was also at telephoto zoom, so aperture comes into play there. I think...
Duck. Yes, there are ducks in Arizona. Trucked in from other, naturally duck-bearing states, no doubt.
Shots taken with the lens fully zoomed.
Attempting to control depth of field by playing with aperture settings and shooting with a nearly horizontal background.
Looking up a palm tree...
Sun going down toward the neighboring golf course. These are the kind of shots that I will really need to know what I'm doing.
The camera cost $179.99. So for all it does, that's a damn good deal as far as I'm concerned. Thank you for my gift, Miss Jay Zee!
The main reason I got this gift early was so that I can bring it with me to Dallas and take some decent shots. So yay!
