I'm just about to finish my (third? fourth?) replay of Deus Ex Poll Next Game Extra information which may or may not be useful:
  • I own all three already (presents from my wishlist) so cost isn't a factor
  • I'll be playing on a PC
  • As the above list suggests, I like RPGs. I like open-endedness and player freedom, but I'm willing to forfeit a measure of them for good ( Read more... )

I've no idea, but if it ends up being Fallout 3, let me know how you find it: I bought it a while ago, but haven't got round to taking the wrapping off.

I think both DA:O and F3 are excellent games. DA:O has some very interesting party/social dynamics, including literally the FIRST romance subplots that I have EVER encountered in a game that did not seriously fucking enrage me. Fallout is resolutely solo, which is fine by me as well, but it makes for a much bleaker in-game experience (which is appropriate for the nature of the world ( ... )

Thanks for this. I agree that from what you say Fallout 3 sounds closer to my ideal game; but from the other comments it seems like playing Dragon Age now would be a good idea as there will be more people to enthuse about it with, whereas Fallout 3 can be enjoyed anytime.

I'm just about to start Dragon Age myself, so I have a certain bias. =)

i've just started dragon age and Nick has just started fallout. i have enjoyed both so far but i am a bigbig fan of bioware stuff so i have to vote for them even though i have also heard some of the combat is frustrating. but it has CLAUDIA BLACK voicing a character. sadly cos i'm a girl i can't romance with her but i am already plotting a second (eviller) playthrough just so i can get it on with her. yum.

oh also dragon age seems to be a 'pause then sort out what all your characters are going to do' type of game. i think fallout's combat would suit you better but hey - you can play both!

Dragon Age allows homosexual relationships! So you can romance anybody you want to! (Though good luck getting Morrigan interested in you; that woman is COLD.)

Thank heavens Bioware's learned its lesson since the big pile of genderfail fuckery that was Baldur's Gate. I'm still annoyed thinking about that.

i think only certain characters are open to homosexual relationships. i am plotting an evil man character to attract Morrigan (cos i want to hear Claudia Black say sexy things to me).

awww i loved Baldur's Gate. i don't mind that they were restrictive with the romancing options. they weren't exactly great romances.

It wasn't just the romancing stuff that infuriated me about Baldur's Gate. Everything about the gender was fail -- from the prostitutes to the succubi/harpies/whatever they were. There were, like, no normal women to be found :( I was told it got better with later games/expansions, but I was so skeeved out that I stopped playing the series :(

tl;dr, I'm touchy about that stuff. Which is why I was so excited when DA:O did it (mostly) right. I didn't realize that you couldn't make every party member into TEH GAY, though. I was kind of hoping to play a guy on my next pass through and, like, convert Sten!

I've only played Fallout 3 out of the choices (I did get Mass Effect from the Steam Christmas sale but haven't tried it yet), but I'd generally rather follow up a setting-heavy game like Deus Ex with something far removed so the fantasy option gets my vote.
