Kagome and her mother stood side by side watching as InuYasha and Jii-chan simply stared at each other. As ten minutes stretched into twenty with no sign of either man starting to bend, the set about preparing dinner together much like they had on those rare nights she was home from her journeys in the past.
Even though it had been close to five hundred years Kagome still felt at home here and had missed her mother something terribly, appreciating her far more once she had become a mother herself. Unfortunately the happy reunion wasn’t going quite as planned.
“Uh, Mom, Sis? What’s going on?” Souta asked.
“Nothing to worry about, Dear,” his mother replied. “InuYasha and Jii-chan are having a bit of a disagreement is all.”
“It doesn’t look like much of a disagreement,” Souta offered dropping his football gear and stepping out of the genkan.
“Call it a battle of wills,” Kagome said. “Don’t I look at least a little different, squirt, aside from the belly?”
Souta looked at her, really looked for the first time and his eyes widened. “Whoa, Sis, you’re knocked up and you look way older too.”
“I don’t look that old, brat,” she said with a scowl. “Anyway, Jii-chan wants us to get married again, even though we’ve already been married five hundred years and InuYasha doesn’t want to because he thinks it will be like saying he’s was dishonorable enough not to make me his wife before now.”
“I will see my granddaughter properly married,” Jii-chan said.
“And I told you she was properly married five hundred years and seven pups ago,” InuYasha snapped.
“Um, so why don’t you just like renew your vows or something?” Souta asked. “That way Jii-chan can be sure Sis is properly married without it being like they weren’t already.”
Both men looked at the boy and then each other.
“But she doesn’t wear all that make up or a damn wig,” InuYasha insisted. “I want to see her and not some painted doll I don’t recognize.”
“No hiding what you are before the kami-sama,” jii-chan added. “I will make sure the shrine is closed to visitors.”
Another moment passed and they nodded to each other before coming to their feet and bowing politely to each other.
“Keh, it was an honor crossing swords with you old man,” InuYasha said with a grin.
“The honor was mine, grandson,” jii-chan replied.
“Great, now that I’ve saved the day, when’s dinner?” Souta asked. “I’m starved.”
“Yes, where is dinner?” Jii-chan asked. “I seemed to have worked up an appetite.”
“Doing what, old man? Sitting in a chair,” InuYasha scoffed.
“Demon be gone!” Jii-chan cried throwing a powerless ofuda at InuYasha.
Kagome giggled. “The more things change the more they stay the same it seems.”
Her mother laughed with her. “I know exactly what you mean, dear, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
“Me neither,” Kagome agreed.
