A/N: Part of my series Bound to Fall chapter one can be found here.

The berth people gave him had never really bothered Naraku before now. His classmates thought he was dangerous, a delinquent, made even more unstable by the volatility of his Hanyou blood. Human delinquents choose to be dangerous, Naraku had been born dangerous. All likelihoods pointed him down the slippery slope into madness. He’d heard of other Hanyou succumbing to their blood, to their anger, to the need to tear flesh from bone.

Yet, the aura of malevolence that surrounded him warded people away from him. There was no one who would dare confront him, so rage had never been a problem. That was the trigger, they said, unadulterated rage.

Ruby eyes met the gaze of a nervous looking kohai, and he crooked a wry brow as she dropped all of her things in response. He breathed deeply through his nose and the scent of her terror flooded through his brain, sour and numbing. It had never really bothered him before. But now, the terror gnawed at him and made his gut clench in anxiety.

If Kagome came to her senses... if she realised that he was dangerous and tried to avoid him, what would he do? Would the hope, that had bloomed so recently, wither and die before it could even take root?

“Naraku-kun!” Kagome sang as she leant out of their classroom window and waved at him. “I’ll be out in a minute!”

Naraku shut his eyes and kept his smile to himself.

And hope put down its first tentative root.
