My best friend on campus, Ariel, is being terminated.  She's not even being displaced; she's being terminated... because her intern status isn't up until the summer.  Her last paycheck is July 5 and she just found out today.  She was going to help me run the academy next year; she volunteered to do LINK.  I guess that's done.  The best science

Technically, this budget crisis is a state thing, and while Bush and Co are responsible for picking their butts while the economy collapsed, the history of our state's economic woes is a series of bad decisions. Prop 13. The dot-com boom and subsequent crash; that boom really only benefited the wealthy, but the crash hurt everyone. Endless sprawl, unchecked development, insurance companies running rampant, energy deregulation, all these things have just let the rich get richer and, as Jon Stewart said very pointedly, using our money to capitalize their adventurism. Time after time, their bubbles have burst--energy, housing, dot-coms, etc, and the general public suffers. California is like the national crisis writ small.

This is why I'm a liberal, angry, and try to stay involved in politics. We are in danger of paralyzing our state.

That is just awful. The LAUSD was underfunded even during flush times and now it is just criminal neglect that they are enacting on our kids.
