Okay, this will come over as a little naive to the rest of you so apologies in advance.
I got this cheque from a US mag that I had written for. Never having had to cash a US cheque before I sent it merrily off to my British bank account with Alliance and Leicester. I got a nice little statement today.

Original cheque: $50
Exchange rate: 1.7something

I figured you would have been subjected to the same sort of thing, with all your short story sales. Is it really just my crappy bank then? :/

I never had such a bad experience, no. Although, in the beginning, some of my sales to small mags were in the order of $10 and I never bothered cashing them.

FYI; the banks are universally trying to get rid of checks, there vestigial, innificient and difficult to varify; so that ten pound fee is more of a 'stop uning cheques you fool' then an 'om nom nom nom moar monies' plan.
