I think the new series of lightening talks and panels on game design and development as part of this year’s Q-Con are going to be really great. It was an inspired notion (of Glenn Davidson’s) to take the next logical step at a games convention and address the idea that attendees might actually want to be a part of the industry they are so keen to ( Read more... )

I'm assuming games industry is similar to fandom meaningrequired June 22 2011, 10:43:15 UTC
Andy tells me a lot about SciFi/Fantasy Fandom, and one of the problems over there is, if someone puts together a compendium, there is a "woman's section" rather than their work being in the appropriate content section.

I think the problem is that the balance is only just starting to tip :/ At least, I hope it is.

Although growing up, I was attached to Roberta Williams, who created things like the Kings Quest, Space Quest etc computer games. They are out there, but maybe not so easily to get to Belfast?

Also QCon sounds like its going to be awesome :) (I'll be camping, probably being rained on).

I imagine there are major similarities between sf fandom and the games industry. At least most of fandom is willing to admit it's an issue though, I'm not sure the same can be said for the game dev community.

Since the post, I've discovered that the percentage of women in the industry is estimated at only 4%, which is crazy when the percentage of female gamers is estimated to be 40+%. I've also discovered a conference in London in September which has some major industry people at it, exploring the issue. Might try to get to that.

Q-Con is shaping up to be pretty epic this year! :) I wish I could just go as a punter and enjoy it! Heh.

Good luck with your camping! LARP/festival/holiday? :)
