Let's imagine, for a moment, that the late Soviet KGB was not simply a group of bureaucratic careerists, resembling characters from "Our Man in Havana." Instead, consider it as an omnipresent and possibly self proclaimed benevolent force that started working to counter the inevitable collapse of the Soviet Union

Чтобы "органы" работали на будущий успех через дестабилизацию своей страны прямо сейчас? Такой парадокс можно предположить. Но сложновато, да и всё им было понятно, и приоритеты другие, скорее всего, у них были. Всякую шелупонсь "отрабатывать", но о себе и "запасном аэродроме" не забывать. Они потом в массе после развала СССР все вдруг оказались причастными к плодам приватизации бывшей советской ценной собственности, всюду вдруг стали местными какими-то важными людьми во всех структурах власти.

"в массе после развала СССР все вдруг оказались причастными к плодам приватизации" Это в центре было частью всего процесса, на периферии это было просто побочным эффектом от стартовых позиций и компетенций по отношению к конкурентам.

Perhaps the intended results were not what you assume. They didn't want to prevent the collapse of the USSR. They actually were the driving force behind it. But they wanted to control the situation after the collapse and they were preparing the resources in advance. So, I would say, they actually did achieve the results
