You know, I had that same weird problem of being productive at the strangest times of night/day. Then I determined it was my sleep schedule that was totally out of whack. I mentally thought, "I will be awake at 6:30am. I will be awake at 6:30am..." (and by awake I meant alert and no-hitting-of-the-snooze button). And it actually worked. Bizarre. And I also found that I was actually less tired running on fewer hours of sleep than when I was sleeping in. Weird. Anyway, thought that might help. :)
