One week. That's how much longer it is until his birthday. He isn't too terribly excited. Bane knows he'll be hanging out with the team and that's enough for him. His parents have probably already cornered everyone to plan a party and if they haven't, then they're more than likely going to even though he might be getting a little too old for birthday parties. He'll be sixteen.

He isn't surprised when he finds everyone huddled up in a circle probably plotting something that doesn't involve him. That might not be to far off seeing as Davide and Aoi are there also. He realizes that he hasn't seen either of them in a while. Which is kind of bad because he still considers Davide his doubles partner even if he's in high school and the younger boy isn't. He's been ignoring him though not purposely. Tennis, studying, and homework take up a lot of his time. He actually kind of misses all of the annoying puns that always seem to come out of his Davide's mouth. Okay, maybe not. It's been a relief that he hasn't had to deal with them. He'll have plenty of time to deal with them next year.

He walks up with a smile. “You know. You guys don't have to be all secretive over there.” Everyone stops and looks at him.

Saeki smiles. “Who says we're being secretive?”

Bane doesn't know what else to call a group that's huddled up in a circle. “Okay, then what are you guys plotting?"

“Nothing really. Just waiting for you.” Saeki answers.

They end up hanging out and then going to get something to eat. The eating part is a little difficult since someone (Saeki) decides that it's a good idea for them all to try to cram into one booth. It doesn't work and people give them funny looks. It isn't until Itsuki starts asking why they're can't just use two tables that they finally do. They're kind of loud and Davide makes puns while they eat. Bane wants to smack him when he says something along the lines of “There's something fishy about my food.” They're eating sushi. The only reason he doesn't smack the redhead is because he's sure the restaurant owner won't enjoy to violence.

All in all, it ends up being a good day and Bane looks forward to the next time they can all get the chance to hang out with each other again.

The week goes by quickly and Bane's looking forward today. It's his birthday and they're all supposed to be hanging out. Only, when he arrives at the playground, Ryou's the only one there to greet him. Strange. Where's everyone else? He knew Davide wouldn't be around. The younger teen had called him last night. He walks over as Ryou toys with his hair.

“Hey, what happened to everyone else?”

Ryou sighs. “Saeki called me this earlier and said mother decided to drag him off somewhere today.” He's about to ask about Itsuki when Ryou continues. “Apparently, Itchan along went with him to keep him company.” So... it's just the two of them. Maybe there's not going to be a party after all. Not that he cares about having a party. It's more that everyone's busy.

“Ah... Davide said something like that yesterday.” He scratches the back of his head. Aoi was probably doing something as well and just forgot to tell anyone. Either that or he was just late.

“So... what do you want to do?” Ryou asks. Bane guesses that Aoi's not going to show up after all.

“We could just hang out and go get food later like we all originally planned.” He suggests. It's the only thing that he can really think of. He's never exactly hung out one on one with just Ryou before.

Ryou wanders over to one of the old swing sets and sits, swaying slightly back and forth. Bane follows and can't remember the last time that he played on a swing set. Well actually he can. It was when they were all younger and he and Davide had fought over who was going to swing first. Neither one of them had ended up going first because Ryou had taken it while they were fighting.

He shook his head and sat on the swing next to Ryou. The playground is kind of empty. There aren't many kids out today.

“So...”

“Happy Birthday.” Ryou finally says. Bane has been beginning to think that he'd forgotten. He himself has almost forgotten.

“Thanks.” It grows silent and awkward and Bane really doesn't know what to say to him. “Hey. How's Atsushi been?” If there's anything that gets Ryou's attention, it's mention of his twin. Ryou immediately looks up and away from the ground.

“Last I checked, he's still going to that school.” There's a small frown on his face. “But he said something about coming to visit soon. So I suppose it's forgivable.” A far as Bane knows there's nothing more that Ryou complains about that Atsushi being away. Well that and his hair. You just don't mess with Ryou's hair.

He remembers when they were kids and in harmless fun, they braided Ryou's hair and put it in pigtails, while he was taking a nap. Ryou did talk to them for almost two weeks. There had also been the time with the paint. Davide had (with some pun that Bane can't bother to bring himself to even try to remember) curiously dipped a piece of Ryou's hair in the paint Bane's mother had given them to play with. Davide had thought it was Atsushi's though that really wasn't a great excuse either way. Paint does not go with hair. No matter if Atsushi might not have minded as much. It's probably why Ryou doesn't like art class.

“Visiting's good. You talk to him a lot though, right?”

“That's not really the point.” Ryou's feet are planted on the ground. “Even if he does visit, he's still going to be leaving again. And no, I don't. ”He sighs. “We talk every now and then. I think he's figured out that every chance I get, I'll try to get him to come back.”

Bane thinks that maybe it would be a good idea to change the subject. “So...Did you hear about Saeki flirting with that second year?”

Ryou snorts. “Which one?”

Well that's hard to answer. Saeki's a hopeless flirt and there are a lot of rumors about who's he's flirted with and who he hasn't. He knows that Ryou can see that he's stumped.

“Saeki's flirting will get him in trouble one day.” Ryou says, standing up. He looks at Bane. “Okay, I think I've stalled you long enough.”

“Huh.” What's that supposed to mean?

“Just follow me.”

Bane follows and doesn't bother to ask why he's doing so. They end up Rokkaku Chuu's club room. He hasn't been here in a while. Ryou moves out of the way and he opens the door. He jumps when there's an unorganized yell of “surprise” and “happy birthday.” Oh. Somehow between arriving at the playground and a minute ago, he'd forgotten that it was his birthday. He gives Ryou a look, and then gives Saeki a look as well. Saeki has to be the one to put Ryou up to this. Saeki just smiles and offers him cake. Everything's fine until Davide has to throw out a pun.

“Don't eat too much cake or it'll become a girthday. Pft.”

Bane sighs and can't help but to kick him.
