The wind atop the mountain nipped at Avair's nose. Her meager robes not enough to keep the chill from penetrating her skin she shivered. It seemed unfair that she had to climb the rocks herself to her death. But then, having to die at all seemed unfair. Only 10 years of age and she was told she had to die "for the good of the village." She had always been different. Her own past seemed like those stories the old merchants would tell to kids when they visited. Her mother died giving her life and her father was unknown and she always could hear calls in the distance. They had gotten louder lately, but they were always there. She wished nothing more than to be left alone though, it wasn't like she asked to be different than anyone else.
As she approached the top she sniffed the air. There was no brimstone of course, she really didn't expect it. There was a dragon, she had seen him. But he didn't look the fire type. As she approached the cave she felt nervous as though her legs would give out. She took very slow steps towards the mouth of the cave when she heard movement.
A low grown rose from the cave as the shuffling of a large creature created a sense of pending doom for poor Avair. Then the light touched his scales. Blue and violet with pink laced along the edges he stood as tall as the Village's largest building with the feet of an eagle and eyes the color of rust. His belly was a soft yellow color and his breathing smelled sweet.
The beast stared at Avair for a moment then huffed. "Oh for heaven's sake. A human?" He lay down in front of the entrance. "I am fine with sheep or cattle, but humans? Yuck. Too stringy."
Avair stared confused for a second but not at the talking dragon, at the fact that she could understand him as if it were second nature. "Pardon?"
The dragon sighed "I am not much of a meat eater in the first place, but I do enjoy cattle on occasion but humans taste almost as revolting as pork. I see you can understand my words."
"Is that a problem?" Avair asked shaking.
"Unusual, yes, problem, who knows. It has been a long time since I have seen one of your kind." The dragon stood up and moved away from the entrance. "Come on in little dragonite, before you freeze to death."
"Dragonite?" Avair said not moving.
The dragon huffed again. "You are not aware... go figure. Come inside and I will explain it to you, you are no good dead."
Still confused Avair cautiously entered the cave. The still air felt much warmer and even more so when the dragon entered blocking the outside air. He seemed to curve his body to shield her from the cold.
"If you choose you may make a fire, I am not able to myself." The dragon said.
"I didn't think so. What kind of dragon are you though?" Avair asked with innocent curiosity.
"Faerie." The dragon said with pride lying down. "My name is Stan. Or rather that is what you may call me."
"I am Avair." It seemed strange that his name was so simple but she was slowly becoming more comfortable around him. "So what is a dragonite?"
"A dragonite is a sort of sorcerer with dragons blood dominating their veins yet they remain human. You can communicate with and sense dragons as well as potentially control some. I admit I would rather you refrained from that... whenever you learn." Stan moved his tail around Avair pushing her closer to him. "I am not cold blooded you may be closer to warm up."
"W-why help me? I was to be a sacrifice."
"I wouldn't kill you regardless, but since you are a dragonite you can help me." Stan stated.
"Help you with what?" Avair felt tired.
"The dragon which attacked your village that those fools blame on me. It is not the first crazed dragon I have seen, I am sure you have felt the changes too. I need to know what is going on." Stan leaned his face in close to Avair's. "You are tired little Avair, You may sleep child. We can discuss further tomorrow."
Avair wanted to object but she couldn't, the fatigue of climbing to the summit had taken its toll and she needed to sleep. Her consciousness faded gently as she instinctively felt herself curling up beside Stan drifting into a dream.
