Are acer laptops any good?!?! :P
Or anyone else have any input on them?

edit: I'm actually thinking I can make do without a laptop now. Seeing as our family has a main computer and my brother has his own, i can probably live without it...hmm...

Haha...damn
I was looking at one for about 550, and comes with 1 year warranty...except...batteries aren't included. Which is just retarded.

yeah my battery = fail from right the moment i first unpackaged the laptop. Since then at random times the power supply would just fail and I will have a blinking orange light which causes keyboard input not to be read 1/2 of the time unless you type very slowly, have to hibernate, switch off power supply then switch it back on so the light is green again to type properly again like just then. Just thought it was nice knowing that im not the only one who has had this problem =)

Yeah...I'm just curious about Acers, cos they're pretty cheap atm. I know Dell is pretty good and I thought Toshiba was good, but 3 years for a Toshiba laptop is hardly what I would call good quality.

yeah x2 on the Dell, a lot of people in my labs use it, i heard from PLE that Toshiba is shit so they stopped selling them and replaced them with ACERs ~_~ but at the end of the day when it comes to laptops, the more you wait the better stuff is, like my laptop costed $1650 and I got it towards the end of 2006, it'd probably be worth about $700-800 right now as for the same price you could get a core 2 duo (quad core laptops might come in soon im guessing) and 2 gig ram etc...

I think you just got a shitty toshiba one, (assumeing thats what your comment is referring to)

I got my old laptop in 2002, and while it is now an old old machine, its still works okay. It does cry if I do anything on it but word and the internet....

Overal, you probably don't need a laptop, your job wouldnt require you to explicitly have your own right? Using the home one and work one would probably work out alright. (I think....)

I do not recommend an Acer ;P
My Dad has one and ... well, it's rubbish really and considering he got the most expensive one at the time .. I guess it goes to show ;D
A year later and it's shutting down randomly (like you adjust the screen and it'll just switch off and having severe issues, plus the keyboard on it is HORRIBLE.

yeah... if I were buying a new laptop... i probably would be thinking of spending at least $1000 on it aye. Sub $1000 laptops r pretty slow already by today's standards. At least a $1k laptop will last you longer (even if it will cost more initially).

For example, most sub $1k laptops come with celeron processors which are only single core and are pretty slow. For $1k, you can get a dell with a core 2 duo cpu (dual core) which runs stuff reasonably fast and runs cooler/sucks less power than older model cpus.

Since you're no longer studying though, there might not really be a need for you to have a laptop anymore? $1000 can buy you a pretty decent desktop computer (22" LCD monitor, much faster than a laptop). It'll probably be more futureproof as well since you can probably upgrade it later down the track.

Haha,
Thanks heaps for the advice mate.
Yeah, I do sorta need a laptop, cos I'm studying again. But I think that I can probably deal without one for a while.
I do have a family computer, but I'm a bit tight on cash atm to spend money on a new computer, which is why I'm looking at cheap options.
Will probably deal without for now :)

Don't know much about Acer but Dell is good. Win's and mine Dell Laptops have lasted awhile and we abuse ours quite a bit. I barely use mine now and I was thinking of sending it for recycling. It is about 4-5 years old? If you have space, you might be better off building a new desktop!! :P But you know, considering you spend the WHOLE day on a PC. You can do without a machine if you're not addicted....
