When my parents divorced, my mom started dating a guy named Dave. he always seemed to think himself something of a father figure to me [he wasn't], always overestimating his influence on me and underestimating my emotional maturity.
I didn't dislike Dave solely because I was misanthropic. I was just fine with him until he started trying to mold my [according to him] tender, innocent young mind. I have no patience for guys who think I exist solely to absorb their infinite wisdom. If he wanted responsibility-free ego boosting, he should have bought a talking Elmo doll.
Also, while this may have been less of an issue for you, he had some problems with personal boundaries. Like "when is nudity appropriate?" type personal boundaries. It creeped me out.

Wait, is he *still* trying to reassure you that the breakup wasn't your fault? (Actually, I have it on good authority that the breakup was at least partially *my* fault. And you know what? I'm okay with that.)

Also, email me about those goddamn headphones.

what goddamn headphones?

And I don't remember the nudity thing... maybe you were just unlucky/I was lucky?

But yeah, when you guys were in Asia he called, and he told me "and I really want you to know Schuyler, what happened between me and your mother has nothing to do with you [blah blah]."

Ah, yes, the nudity thing. He decided I was spending too much time on the computer, so he decided to start wandering around naked as a way to force me out of the room. I was probably thirteen or fourteen at the time, and I cannot express to you how disturbing it was.
