I've been trying to articulate this very point. Indeed, this is a teachable moment about the first amendment.
1-Laura said what she said. No one stopped her or arrested her.
2-People thought what she said was nasty and expressed it. No one stopped them or arrested them.
3-The company who employed her probably pressured her about it.
4-She quit.
The first amendment is about free speech unabridged by the gov't. You can SAY whatever you want; that doesn't mean speech without repercussions. A preacher on the subway can talk about teh baby jesus as much as they want; doesn't mean I don't get to yell back.

And, you reminded me of another 1st Amendment Point ( since tweeted and facebooked)
1st Amendment Fun: You can only shout "Fire In The Disco, Fire At The Taco Bell" *IN* a Disco & Taco Bell if they are actually on fire.
