Original e-mail, from me to Peter Pan:

Pan,

You have escaped me for the last time. If you think you can avoid me hook any longer you are sorely mistaken. I will catch you Pan, you just wait.

Captain James Hook

Tell me, you wise American, how am I supposed to text an American cellphone from Finland! The number the owner gave me was

917 579 1234

(okay, I changed the last four numbers :P), but any attempt at texting to it hasn't succeeded.

I've tried +1 917 579 1234 and since the owner of the cellphone says Verizon claims you should be able to call/text that number from anywhere in the world with 011 917 579 1234 I've also tried +1 11 917 579 1234 with no success.

Because, you can reach MY cellphone from anywhere in the world with +358 50 568 1234, where the + means "abroads", 358 is "Finland", 50 is the "area code" of Elisa, my provider (except, if you call that number from within Finland, it's 050), and the last seven numbers are my cellphone number (changed, sorry :P)

The American hasn't been able to send anything to my cellphone either (she claims the plus sign is not in use there, which I doubt).

That's a good question and a problem I have yet to tackle. Did you try without the +? I know know where to begin on this one, sorry. Also, I believe we do use the + here, though I've never had to. So, there's your other side of the story.

Thanks for trying, though! I was hoping you had called home from here and knew how it was done :D

I've emailed Verizon Sweden (I doubt they will answer within this century...) and I have a couple of more combinations to try out now :D

I had a nice Nokia phone that I was using there thanks to the kindness of my friend Heidi, and I went out and bought an Elisa card for it. While I never called home with it (because my card only had a 20€ balance on it, I did randomly get a phone call from on of my friends as I was walking about the city.

Good luck with Verizon, I never liked that company.
