A couple of people had asked, and instead of writing long emails, I'll summarize my experience so far here. (Easier for me, I admit.)

I am now finishing my first month of intermittent fasting (5:2). Essentially, I pick two days a week and don't eat on those days.

I think you're very wise to tackle this issue head on. I have a good friend who is morbidly obese and her mobility is now at zero, alongside her multiple health issues. It makes me get on the treadmill. Obesity, when it gets out of hand, can do more than threaten your life, it can threaten your quality of life. I hope this works well for you. If I can resist eating foods that I know I shouldn't be eating I might make some progress myself. I'm like you, it's not a matter of feeling full or hungry. For me it's that the chocolate cake looks really good. This time of year it's that ice cream sounds so very good. Discipline is hard.
