I deal with the IRS everyday. It isn't a big bad old lady scaring organization. I think the writer of this column, or anyone who thinks abolishing income tax with a larger sales tax is a solution, should spend some time reading the tax codes.
On average, this flat tax would affect the working class that has managed to stay above poverty level the most. In states like Tenn, the state sales tax is at 9.25%, which is very high. Adding to it is not the way to grow the economy.
It is very rare I prepare returns for an average young couple that I don't get them a refund back on their federal returns.
Also, the average size of most American businesses is 7 employees. A good many of these are sole propieters. Does taxing the local guy who runs a garage seem fair so on one pays income tax?

The guy that wrote this should work as an accountant for small businesses and indivduals for a while. He'd change his story.
