Reason #691 to Have a Spare Car Key

A spare car key would be a nice thing right now ...

I returned from Portland and was picked up at the airport by the shuttle from Northen Quest Casino as arranged. My car was waiting for me at the hotel delivered to the entrance by the valet. I loaded my bags into the car and drove the hour home. The snow depth increased steadily as I headed north ( Read more... )

I dislike the key to my car, which can't be copied & costs $300 or something to get an extra key (I have two). Used to make multiple copies so I wouldn't worry about losing one. When I kayaked, one was in my dry bag in my kayak, & one in my life jacket in case I lost my boat. Not that I've ever lost one, but it gave me peace of mind.

I also dislike how rental cars come w/ two keys, but they're wired together. What's the point of having two keys if you can't put them in separate places?

Mine is an od-fashioned double key metal key ... $15 or less at any key cutting kiosk (love the alliteration).

I remember thinking a few times that I should get a spare ... the time I was having some other keys made and I remembered, when I asked they were out of blanks for a Mazda key and then I forgot about it again. I've had the car for 13 years without having a spare.

My understanding why they are wired together, is because that is the easiest way to make sure they remain together when the car is eventually sold by the rental company.

I locked myself out of my house this morning for the first time ever. Only my one neighbor has a key, but no one was home. I finally reached her on the phone, and she had given a spare key to her house to another neighbor, so I went to that neighbor, got the key to the first neighbor's house, then retrieved my key from where she had put it in her house and unlocked my door. Then, I spent 30 minutes looking for my keys before I found them hidden on a National Geographic by my bed (not their normal location), blending in like a zebra in the fynbos.
