Interesting from city beat:

For the first time in Alberta, the Calgary Police Service has
laid a charge for unauthorized recording of a movie.

On December 21, 2007 at approximately 1:15 p.m., the Calgary
Police Service responded to a suspicious person complaint at
the Empire Studio 16 Country Hills movie theater at 388
Country Hills Blvd. N.E. Police

Now, the guy should certainly be busted and charged for what he's doing.

However, he should be charged under civil law, not criminal law. He's not stealing from society, he's stealing from the movie companies. They should be the ones to take him to court, not her majesty.

One of my favourite Heinlein quotes is almost relevant here:

There has grown up in the minds of certain groups in this country the notion that because a man or corporation has made a profit out of the public for a number of years, the government and the courts are charged with the duty of guaranteeing such profit in the future, even in the face of changing circumstances and contrary to public interest. This strange doctrine is not supported by statute or common law. Neither individuals nor corporations have any right to come into court and ask that the clock of history be stopped, or turned back.

That amendment makes our police into rent-a-cops for the movie industry.
